Ghana Local Chinese Language Teachers Training Programme launched at UCC

The Ghana Local Chinese Language Teacher Training Programme, purposely designed to build capacity among Ghanaian teachers in Chinese language instruction, has been held at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

Hosted by the Confucius Institute, UCC, the event brought together key stakeholders in education to celebrate the growing collaboration between Ghana and China through language and cultural exchange.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Ghana Director of the Confucius Institute, Prof. Emmanuel Amo Ofori, highlighted the strategic importance of the initiative in promoting global partnerships.

He indicated a commitment to bridge the gap and deepen connections between Ghana and China through the training programme, adding that Proficiency in Chinese opens doors to academic exchanges and international partnerships.

Dr. Mrs. Juliette Dufie Otami, the Central Regional Director of Education, commended the participants for their dedication. She advised the teachers, stating, “As educators, we are also learners who must remain deeply committed and globally aware.” She urged them to embrace this opportunity with dedication and a sense of purpose.

Also addressing the gathering, Prof. Kwame Osei Kwarteng, Provost of the College of Humanities and Legal Studies at UCC, emphasised the relevance of international collaboration in today’s interconnected world.

“We are all aware that in the 21st century, the world is a global village. This calls for greater collaboration,” he noted.

“I commend the University’s management for always organising such programmes and staying ahead with positive initiatives,” he stated.

Gustav Cobbinah Atu Esq, a representative of the Central Regional Minister, Hon. Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah, also lent his support to the programme, describing it as timely and essential.

 “We need more of such initiatives because China has become a global force to reckon with,” he highlighted.

He advised participants to imbibe the spirit of collaboration, curiosity and mutual support and refrain from polluting their learners but rather guide them to grow in global competence.

The ceremony marked the beginning of a comprehensive training programme that will empower local educators with the skills and tools needed to teach Chinese effectively, further strengthening Ghana’s educational and diplomatic ties with China.

DIVAGRI project takes final-year Students through field training

Final-year students of the Department of Agricultural Engineering have participated in a hands-on training session on modern irrigation systems.

This was meant to equip the students with practical knowledge to enable them to succeed in the world of work.

It was held by Revenue Diversification Pathways in Africa through its bio-based and circular agricultural Innovations (DIVAGRI) project, a consortium project that aims to increase the productivity, income, and economic opportunities of subsistence and smallholder farmers.

The students were taken through the operation and application of sprinkler systems, drip irrigation, and the Subsurface Self-Regulating, Low-Energy, Clay-Based Irrigation (SLECI system), a technology designed for resource-efficient water use in smallholder farming.

A key highlight of the session was a demonstration on the use of recycled wastewater bottles for irrigation: an affordable, sustainable method suited for urban gardening and home-based agriculture.

This innovation aligned with DIVAGRI’s goals of promoting climate-smart, low-cost agricultural technologies that improve water efficiency and enhance resilience among smallholder farmers.

The training, led by a renowned soil and water conservation engineering expert, Prof. Ransford Opoku Darko, focused on equipping students with practical skills and technical insights into various irrigation methods and technologies.

Speaking at the event, the Principal Investigator, Ing. Dr Francis Kumi, emphasized the importance of practical training in bridging the gap between theory and real-world application, especially in a climate-vulnerable region like sub-Saharan Africa.

He encouraged students to adopt and promote innovative irrigation practices that conserve water while boosting productivity.

The training marks a key milestone in the DIVAGRI project’s capacity-building efforts, which are aimed at empowering the next generation of agricultural professionals with the knowledge and tools to drive sustainable development in agriculture.

46 Students of School of Economics receive Dean’s Award

The School of Economics has awarded forty-six (46) students at its 2025 Dean’s Awards ceremony.

In all, fifteen (15) Level 200 students, eight (8) Level 300, and nine (9) Level 400 students were awarded at the event held by the School to recognise and motivate high-performing students who obtained first-class results at the end of each academic year.

Special awards were given to Desmond Dela Doh (MPhil Economics), with a CGPA of 3.0385, and Price Opoku (PhD Economics), with a CGPA of 2.6667.

Prof. Mark Armah and Madam Winifred Minnow Quansah were also honoured for their significant contributions to the School.

Speaking as the Guest Speaker at the ceremony, the Deputy Managing Director of Agricultural Development Bank Plc, Prof. Ferdinand Ahiakpor, congratulated the awardees and encouraged them not to rest on their oars.

He urged graduates to be clear about their goals and aspirations to achieve them.

He said that through determination and commitment, not only could they surmount challenges with confidence and clarity but also achieve greatness and positively impact the lives of others and society at large.

He urged students to prioritise good character at all stages of their lives.

Prof. Ahiakpor further advised students to continue the School’s tradition of moral excellence, which had shaped many great individuals globally.

He stressed the positive impact of technology on communication, learning, and interaction.

The Deputy Managing Director emphasised the need to embrace digital transformation, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), to equip students with essential 21st-century skills.

The Dean of the School of Economics, Prof. James Atta Peprah, for his part, highlighted some successes and achievements chalked up by the School over the academic year.

He expressed appreciation to the faculty and administrative staff of the School for their support throughout the academic year.

Prof. Peprah congratulated the students and encouraged other students whose names did not appear on the Dean’s list to put in their best effort for the academic year ahead.

Prof. Ahiakpor, on behalf of ADB PLC, presented a cheque for 10,000 Cedis to the School.

SoB Delegation Meets Vice-Chancellor Ahead of 50th Anniversary Launch

A delegation from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) School of Business has paid a courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, to officially inform him of the launch of the School’s 50th Anniversary celebration. The golden jubilee celebration is themed “University of Cape Coast School of Business @50: Expanding the Frontiers of Business Excellence.”

The delegation was led by the Acting Dean, Prof. Samuel Kwaku Agyei, and included Hon. Seth Terkper, Presidential Advisor on the Economy and Guest Speaker for the anniversary launch; Prof. John Gartchie Gatsie, Advisor to the Bank of Ghana and the immediate past Dean of the School and other faculty members. They were received by the Vice-Chancellor, who was supported by the University Registrar, Mr. Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye.

As part of the visit, Hon. Seth Terkper presented copies of his newly published book, “Value Added Tax in Africa: The Ghanaian Experience,” to the Vice-Chancellor. The Vice Chancellor advocated for the book to be stocked in the University Library to enrich research and learning in tax policy and administration.

“We will do our best to support you,” Hon. Terkper assured, noting his commitment to contributing to the School’s development and the broader university community.

In response, the Vice-Chancellor commended the School of Business for its contributions to academic and professional excellence. He revealed that the University had recently completed 120 new office spaces, which would be shared between the College of Humanities and Legal Studies and the College of Education Studies. He encouraged the School to continue pursuing excellence in teaching, research, and community impact.

UGMS Faculty Undergo Training in Problem-Based Learning at UCC SMS

The School of Medical Sciences (SMS), University of Cape Coast (UCC), has held a three-day Problem-Based Learning (PBL) training for faculty of the University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS).

The programme, which sought to strengthen learner-centered teaching methods, opened with a call to embrace innovative educational strategies tailored for 21st-century medical education.

The Dean of the School of Medical Sciences (SMS), Prof. Sebastian Eliason, presented an address on behalf of the Provost of the College of Health and Allied Sciences (CoHAS), Prof. Martins Ekor. In the address, the provost highlighted the significance of collaborative academic partnerships and stressed UCC's commitment to pedagogical excellence.

The first technical session, led by Prof. Sebastian Eliason, focused on “Innovative Teaching Practices and 21st Century Competencies.” He emphasised the need for a shift from traditional, didactic teaching models towards more learner-centred approaches.

"In today’s knowledge-driven world, it is essential that our methods evolve to reflect the demands of the 21st century,” Prof. Eliason noted. “Critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication must be central to how we train future healthcare professionals,” he highlighted.

Prof. Eliason further stressed the importance of equipping faculty with the tools and mindset necessary to cultivate these competencies in students.

The second session for the day was delivered by Dr. Kwabena Dankwa, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and the Coordinator for Problem-Based Learning (PBL) at the SMS. He introduced participants to the concept and practice of Problem-Based Learning.

"PBL is not just a teaching method; it is a philosophy of learning that places students at the centre of the educational experience," he explained.

"At UCC School of Medical Sciences, we’ve seen significant gains in learner engagement and critical reasoning through PBL.", Dr. Dankwa noted.

Dr. Dankwa also walked participants through the PBL process as practised at UCC, encouraging adaptation and contextualisation of the method in their respective institutions.

The three-day event also featured hands-on activities and detailed explorations of the PBL methodology. Facilitators such as Prof. Patrick O.M. Maison and Prof. Samuel Acquah led sessions on the roles of students and facilitators, assessment tools, and quality assurance in PBL.

The training also included workshops on writing effective PBL scenarios facilitated by Dr. Ansumana S. Bockarie, and discussions on faculty development, digital tools, and institutional strategies for successful PBL implementation led by Prof. Emmanuel K. Achampong and others.

SSA Women’s Commission Raises Awareness on Men’s Mental Health

The Women’s Commission of the Senior Staff Association - Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), University of Cape Coast (UCC) chapter, has held a Mental Health Awareness Forum to highlight men’s mental health challenges. The event was themed, “Silent Battles: Creating Safe Spaces for Men’s Health Wellness.”

Mental health is a fundamental aspect of overall well-being, yet it remains a significant concern, particularly among men. Despite the growing awareness of mental health issues, many men face unique challenges that hinder their ability to seek help and maintain mental wellness.

As a result, the forum aimed to break the silence surrounding the psychological struggles faced by men and encourage open dialogue and institutional support for mental wellness.

In her welcome remarks, Mrs. Winifred Twenewaa Addaney, the SSA Women's Commissioner, explained the rationale behind the Commission’s involvement in the issue.

“While our primary target is women, we recognise that staff welfare is a collective affair. Promoting welfare in our staff community is not a gendered task; it is a collective effort,” Mrs. Addaney noted.

The keynote speaker, Mr. Daniel Owusu-Koranteng, General Secretary of the Maritime and Dockworkers Union and President of the Ghana National Association of ADR Practitioners, described the topic as one that remained largely unexplored.

He noted that Mental health issues in men were a pressing concern that required attention and action. By understanding the challenges men face, including societal pressures, stigma, and barriers to seeking help, it was necessary to work towards creating an environment that promotes their mental well-being.

He highlighted the common anxieties men face, including financial, health, career, relationship, social performance, masculinity, and future anxieties. He stated, “Men have insecurities, they deserve help, they feel things, and they need love and care."

He went on to encourage participants to share their problems and make friends who can be a source of emotional and psychological support in times of need.

A panel discussion, moderated by Mr. Elijah Osafo Amoako, followed the keynote presentation and featured insights from leading professionals, including Prof. Emeritus K. Awusabo-Asare of the Department of Population and Health at UCC, Dr. James Kojo Prah, Director of the University Health Services, and Mr. Sampson Opoku Agyemang from the Department of Mental Health.

Prof. Awusabo-Asare remarked that “Mental health issues are in a continuum,” pointing to the need for sustained care across different stages of life.

Dr. Prah called for a shift in attitudes towards health.

“If you see a man in the hospital, it is likely that his wife or a woman is with him. It is time to change and take our health more seriously.”

Mr. Agyemang also urged a mindset change towards work and wellness.

“If you don’t change your mindset about your work, you will have career anxiety, which will cause you stress,” he warned.

He added, “If you have strong muscles, it doesn’t mean you have a strong mind,” emphasising the need to pay attention to emotional wellbeing. He further advocated for the establishment of wellness centers in universities, noting that “mental health issues are culture specific.”

Chairperson for the event, Dr. Irene Korkoi Aboh, reiterated the importance of the event. She said the stigma surrounding men’s mental health has been a societal issue for a long time.

She also expressed appreciation to the Women’s Commission for initiating the forum.

122 Students Honoured at UCC Faculty of Social Sciences Dean’s Awards Ceremony

The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has honoured 122 students for their outstanding performance across various levels of study at the 2025 Dean’s Awards Ceremony.

The colourful ceremony was graced by the Provost of the College of Humanities and Legal Studies (CHLS), Prof. Kwame Osei Kwarteng; the Acting Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Augustine Tanle, and Mr. Isaac Augustus Ogoe, the Human Resource and Administrative Manager of PEPL.

The Provost, Prof. Osei Kwarteng, commended the awardees for their hard work and dedication and encouraged them to earn their degrees honestly. He stressed that earning a degree through honest means was vital for several compelling reasons, such as students not undermining their credibility, not only with their educators but also with themselves.

“Upholding academic integrity builds trust, which is essential for personal and professional relationships,” he explained.

He further added that earning a degree through hard work and not through cheating makes students more employable.

“The primary goal of education is to gain knowledge and skills. Cheating shortcuts this process, preventing students from truly understanding the material. An honest approach ensures that graduates are well-equipped with the knowledge needed in their fields,” Prof. Kwarteng said.

In his remarks, the Acting Dean, Prof. Augustine Tanle, praised the awardees and challenged them to remain consistent with their performance.

“Try and maintain the class you have attained,” he said, urging them to uphold values such as loyalty and humility. He further reminded students about the power of effective communication.

“Your language can send you, promote you, or demote you,” he advised.

Three students emerged as the overall best at their respective levels. Emmanuella Agyeman, a level 200 student, topped the list with a CGPA of 3.96. She was closely followed by Elizabeth Amoo, level 300 with a CGPA of 3.95, and Martin Efemor Paku from level 400 with a CGPA of 3.88.

In his keynote speech, Mr. Isaac Augustus Ogoe, the Human Resource and Administrative Manager of P. E Power Limited, who spoke on the theme, "Beyond the Degrees: Cultivating Employability in a Dynamic World." urged students to build their character and professionalism together with academic work. He also emphasised the need to be disciplined, time-conscious and reliable.

Touching on the importance of dressing appropriately, he noted that dressing decently was a vital aspect of student life that can significantly impact various facets of academic and social experiences. He added that the university is a transitional phase where students prepare for their professional lives.  As such, adopting a habit of dressing appropriately helps students to develop a sense of professionalism that will be beneficial in job interviews and workplace settings.

2.  ONLINE APPLICATIONS
Applicants should visit apply.ucc.edu.gh then under “Application Process” select “click to apply for a programme” for further instructions.

 

3.  BASIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A. Bachelor of Science (BSc) Degree in a science-related programme with a minimum of
a Second Class Honours (Lower Division) obtained from a recognised tertiary institution.

B. Pass an entrance examination to be held on Monday, 15th September, 2025 and a selection
interview to be held from Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th September, 2025.

C.  Interested applicants may participate in Preparatory Classes to be organised from Monday,
1st September, 2025 to Friday, 12th September, 2025 at the College of Health and Allied Sciences Auditorium
. Such applicants would be required to pay an amount of One Thousand, Two Hundred and Fifty Ghana Cedis (GHS1,250.00) to cover the classes, examination and a meal daily (lunch) during the classes.

D.  Candidates who do not participate in the preparatory classes are required to pay for only
examination fees of Four Hundred Ghana cedis (GH₡400.00).

 

4.  FEE-PAYING APPLICANTS

Applicants should note that the programme is strictly fee-paying.

 

5.  NO HARD COPIES OF COMPLETED APPLICATION FORMS REQUIRED

Applicants are required to keep printed copies of their application for their own record and reference after submitting the completed online application form. No hard copy should be sent by POST or delivered by HAND to the University.

SGS and Sam Jonah Library Train Graduate Students on E-Resources

The School of Graduate Studies (SGS), University of Cape Coast (UCC), in collaboration with the Sam Jonah Library, has organised a training workshop to equip new graduate students with skills to maximize the use of electronic resources available to them for research.

The workshop was also designed to help graduate students leverage these resources to enhance their research output and academic performance.

Dr. Mac-Anthony Cobblah, the University Librarian, in a welcome address, described the workshop as a “very important programme.”

He stressed, “We have made an effort to create a welcoming and special environment for you to learn and do research at the library."

Dr.  Cobblah noted that students could access the library's resources even outside campus.

 "Take advantage of the opportunity and learn technical skills because you will need these skills at all costs”, he emphasized.

Dr. Imoro Osman, the E-Resource and Research Support Librarian, illustrated how the students can access materials like articles and books from the University Library's website, how to apply for their own 'Turnitin' accounts, and reference management tools available.

Additionally, he commented that an increase in the number of publications per year would contribute immensely to the university's research output, and therefore, students should consider publishing their articles.

Mr. Kwasi Opuni Karikari, a Chief Library Assistant, demonstrated the use of Mendeley software for organizing references.

Mr. Gabriel Assamah, a Systems Analyst at SGS, illustrated how students could submit their thesis online and apply for a step-down through their Graduate School portal.
