UCC holds 1st International Partners’ Week Celebration

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has organised the first International Partners’ Week Celebration on the theme, “Re-examining Our Historical Identity Within the Context of Internationalisation of Higher Education.”

Referred to as “iPart Week 2024,” the event was attended by international partners from Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. It aimed at strengthening existing partnerships with global universities, build new connections, and contribute to the advancement of knowledge and collaborations on an international scale. 

International students of UCC thrilled the audience with a flag-hoisting performance with recitals about the individual countries.

 Call for ‘Glocalisation’

Delivering a keynote address at the opening of iPART Week 2024, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, Prof. AbdulWahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, noted that the whole concept of internationalisation was not an African thing but a global phenomenon.

According to him, though institutions of higher learning should think globally, there should be an urge to act locally.

“I propose glocalization, that is to think globally and act locally, as a way to ensure continuous internationalisation among all people on the globe”, he emphasised.

Prof. Egbewole while charging African universities to be circumspect when signing MoUs to ensure a win-win situation also encouraged governments of African countries to create a framework that would facilitate visa applications for researchers to reduce the hustle of studying abroad. 

According to him, African universities had been urged not to restrict internationalisation to the global south only, but also to endeavour to create local partnerships which would ensure the continent's progress.

He also called on African governments to take a conscious and deliberate position on internationalisation while admitting that “Brain drain is not bad in itself because it has positive values for internationalisation”.

Prof. Egbewole encouraged curriculum development and regional collaboration and asked for policy on internationalisation for African countries.

Reposition Internationalisation to Support African Universities

Another keynoter, the President of Laweh Open University, Prof Goski Alabi, who spoke on the topic, “Emerging Trends in Students and Staff Mobility,” indicated that African universities had not been intentional and strategic about internationalisation as compared to the rest of the World. As a result, she asked for measures to reposition internationalisation to support African universities in addressing some of the perennial challenges of access, quality, and low capacities for research and also bring about new research and knowledge paradigms.

She mentioned increased mobility, global curriculum and intercultural competence, technological learning platforms, global rankings and competitions, and language and communication skills, as some of the trends in internationalisation.

Prof. Goski Alabi, speaking on the strategies the global north have developed to attract international students, indicated that the UK under Prime Minister Tony Blair, for example, implemented the Prime Minister's Initiative (PMI) to increase the number of international students coming to the UK for education.

"The goal of the UK was to attract 600,000 international students annually by 2030," she added.

The President blamed African universities' inability to woo international students on a lack of strategic and intentional plans leading to marketing and business-oriented approaches that the Global North East was using to internationalise.

"...Because we don't have a plan, we don't understand the subtle marketing and business-oriented approaches that the global North-East is using to internationalise, especially the introduction of rankings," she added.

Prof. Alabi noted that many countries were merging universities to have research output to be competitive in ranking.

"If your university is small and you cannot produce 200 research papers in index journals, how do you compete favourably?" she questioned.

Prof. Alabi said, "Here in Ghana, we find a situation that every region must have a university and, therefore, we are establishing several small universities that may not be competitive," she added.

UCC Committed to Fostering Internationalisation

Chairing the function, the Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, in a remark, said the 1st International Partners’ Week Celebration was proof of the commitment of UCC to foster internationalisation and ensure a continued relationship with the partner universities.

He acknowledged the representatives of partner universities present at the occasion and added, “Your presence is not just a testament to our shared objectives, but also a crucial step towards strengthening our internationalisation agenda”.

The Director of OIR, Prof. Samuel Bert Boadi-Kusi, in an address, expressed his immense gratitude to the entire university community for their support in the organisation of the programme.

The  Deputy Minister of Education, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, who was the Guest of Honour at the event,  formally opened the international partners’ celebration.

In his remarks, he commended management of UCC for the initiative to host key partners form across the world to explore new collaborations.

SALE OF APPLICATION VOUCHER FOR ADMISSION INTO CENTRE FOR TEACHING SUPPORT MASTER OF EDUCATION (M.ED) TEACHING IN HIGHER EDUCATION

 

The M.Ed Teaching in Higher Education is one designed to provide opportunity for tertiary faculty who do not have professional qualification to acquire it through a one year Master of Education in Teaching in Higher Education.

The programme seeks to:

·         Meet the needs of prospective applicants in flexible modes of delivery such as modular, sandwich and a blended approach.

·         Equip students with professional knowledge, skills and help them develop attitudes needed for teaching adult learners in higher education institutions.

·         Expose students to developmental teaching methods that will cater for the needs of the 21st century students such as critical thinking and problem solving.

Students Admission, Progression and Graduation

Applicants should possess at least a master’s degree in any field of study from any recognized Higher Education Institution.

 

Target Group

·         Academic/Teaching Staff of Public/Private Universities, tutors in Colleges of Education, tutors in the Nursing and Midwifery Training Colleges, all lecturers in Technical Universities.

 

·         All Master and Doctoral holders who aspire to teach in tertiary institutions but have no teaching qualification in higher education.

INTERNAL ADVERTISEMENT - APPOINTMENT OF PRO VICE-CHANCELLOR

Applications are hereby invited from experienced, results-oriented and highly motivated academic staff of the University of Cape Coast for the position of Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University which will become vacant on 1st January, 2025.

 

Key Responsibilities

The Pro Vice-Chancellor is deputy to the Vice-Chancellor and assists the Vice-Chancellor in providing leadership for organizing and conducting the academic, financial and administrative business of the University as well as promoting efficiency and good order in the University.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor performs duties of the Vice-Chancellor in the event of temporary absence of the Vice-Chancellor,

The Pro-Vice Chancellor also performs the functions and duties the University Council and Vice-Chancellor determine from time to time and chairs Committees specified in the Statutes.

 

Qualification and Experience

The applicant must

  • be a member of the academic staff of the University of Cape Coast in accordance with Section 8 (1) of the University of Cape Coast Law, 1992 (PNDC L278);
  • be an acclaimed scholar of professorial rank and an individual of stature and integrity with strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills, capable of executing the responsibilities outlined above; and
  • must have at least ten (10) years working experience in the University.

 

Applicant must also provide and show evidence of the following:

  • management, entrepreneurial, fundraising and prudent financial administration skills;
  • experience at the senior management level (Head of Department and above) in the University;
  • capacity to foster and promote good internal and external relations;
  • ability to promote learning, teaching, research, development and effectively co-ordinate academic programmes and activities in the University;
  • in-depth knowledge and understanding of contemporary higher education issues and their implications for University management; and
  • adherence to high ethical standards and professionalism.

 

Tenure of Office

The Pro Vice-Chancellor shall hold office for a non-renewable term of three years. The successful candidate should therefore be able to complete the three-year term before retiring from the service of the University.

UCC Directorate of Internal Audit Receives Recognition

The Directorate of Internal Audit at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has been recognised with two significant awards.

The Director, Mr. Emmanuel P. Owusu, was recently honoured as the Best Internal Auditor by the Internal Audit Agency (IAA).

Also, the Directorate was adjudged the Best Internal Audit Unit in the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s Institutions category, further solidifying the Directorate’s reputation for excellence in audit practice.

Presenting the awards to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, Mr. Owusu said the successes had been achieved as a result of the Directorates commitment towards its mandate of ensuring prudent use of resources in the University.

He indicated that the awards would motivate staff of the Directorate to work tirelessly to sustain the gains made by elevating the internal auditing standards in the University.

On his part, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Boampong commended the directorate for its accomplishments, stating that “this reinforces the University’s latest ranking achievements”.

Prof. Boampong was optimistic that staff of the Directorate would continue to provide independent auditing services to help improve systems and processes in the University and ultimately contribute to better governance and resource management.

School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Receives Computers from M-Plaza

The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has received advanced computer equipment from Mariset Company Limited, also known as M-Plaza. 

The items donated included five brand-new HP Prodesk desktop computers, one Computer UPS Smart system, nine Computer UPS units, and 14 Lenovo all-in-one computers.

Presenting the items, a Sales and Marketing Assistant at M-Plaza, Ms. Evalove Mensah, said the donation was to support teaching and learning in the school. 

She said the donation formed part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility to enhance education in the country. 

“We are really excited to support the School of Pharmacy to produce the best pharmacists in the world. We will continue to extend such support to the school,” she added.

Receiving the items on behalf of the School, the Provost of the College of Health and Allied Sciences, Prof. Martins Ekor, expressed gratitude to M-Plaza for their benevolence.

 He said the equipment would enhance operations at the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and contribute to the overall efficiency of the College.

Prof. Ekor further called on other organizations to follow M-Plaza’s example and support the growth of the College. 

"We appreciate the private-public partnerships because we know that the government alone cannot do it all. We can succeed in this endeavour with support from the corporate world," he noted.

The Dean of the School, Prof. Elvis Ofori Ameyaw, promised that the equipment wouldbe put to good use and properly maintained.

Prof. Ameyaw said the donation would significantly boost the school’s technical capacity, improving both administrative functions and academic work.

12th Oguaa Breast Cancer Campaign Underway at UCC

The Breast Society of Ghana has launched its 12th Oguaa Breast Cancer Campaign at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) as part of its annual humanitarian activities. 

The campaign, which runs from October 14 to 19, 2024, features a series of activities aimed at promoting breast cancer awareness and prevention.

 It coincides with the International Breast Cancer Awareness Month, dedicated to increasing awareness and encouraging women to prioritize their breast health.

In an interview with a representative from the Breast Society of Ghana during a breast cancer screening at the forecourt of the Sam Jonah Library (UCC), Dr. Akwasi Anyanful, noted that it was important for women to take advantage of such screening exercises in order to know their status. He said apart from the breast cancer screening exercise, some of the activities for the campaign included, a symposium and an awareness walk.

Dr. Anyanful who is a Senior lecturer at the School of Medical Sciences indicated that the screening included “an anthropometric assessment, which measures body dimensions and other physical characteristics as part of the health evaluation". He said the medical personnel engaged for the exercise were using cutting-edge equipment to ensure accurate results. 

He expressed gratitude to the sponsors, including the West African Genetic Medicine Centre (WAGMC), Coconut Grove Beach Resort in Elmina, and the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), for their support.

Dr. Anyanful encouraged the public to join the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk to create awareness on breast cancer.
