IEPA, UCC WELCOMES ONE VISITING PROFESSOR FROM NIGERIA AND TWO FULBRIGHT SCHOLARS FROM THE USA TO SUPPORT ITS UNESCO AGENDA

19 Aug, 2021 By DIS

The Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (IEPA) at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) is welcoming three international Professors – one on Sabbatical Leave from Nigeria and two Fulbright Scholars from the United States - to join its dynamic team to drive the UNESCO SDG 4 Agenda.

The first to arrive in July 2021 was Prof. Martins Fabunmi, a Professor in Educational Leadership and Management from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan -Nigeria. Some of the many courses Prof. Fabunmi has facilitated both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels are Educational Management; Educational Planning; Educational Law, Integrity in Management in Education; Strategic Management, Social and Political Context of Educational Planning and Administration; Educational Planning for Community Development; among others. Prof. Fabunmi will be with IEPA until June 2023.

The next to arrive at IEPA in August and September 2021 respectively are the two Fulbright Scholars - Prof. Candace M. Moore and Dr. Jillian Martin, from the United States of America. Both Fulbright Scholars will be teaching at IEPA and working on subject matter research and outreach for ten months until May/June 2022.

Prof. Moore is an Associate Clinical Professor - Higher Education, Student Affairs, and International Education Policy (HESI) Program, the Director and Affiliate Faculty at the Center for Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education (CDIHE) and a Faculty Director - Higher Education in the Ghanaian Context (HEGC) Study Abroad Program at University of Maryland, College Park, MD, USA.  Whilst at IEPA, Prof. Moore will be teaching and conducting research as part of her project: “Culturally Conscious Pedagogy and Practice: Collaborating to Inform Ghanaian Higher Education COVID-19 Response.” Dr. Moore’s Fulbright project will focus on Ghanaian higher education practices as she explores promising ways to enhance African student affairs and higher education. Prof Moore arrives in Ghana in the first week of August 2021.

Dr. Martin, who will be arriving in Ghana in the second week of September 2021, is the Assistant Director for Strategy and Evaluation with the Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement, Washington University in St Louis, Missouri, USA. Dr. Martin leads the evaluation, assessment, strategic development, and organizational learning activities for the Gephardt Institute.  She also supervises Master Research Fellows in conducting literature reviews, evaluation-assessment instrument development, data analysis, data tracking, and reporting. Whilst at IEPA, she will be teaching and supporting ongoing research at the Institute, as well as conducting research on her Fulbright project.

Speaking to the Director-General of IEPA, Dr. Michael Boakye-Yiadom, he could not hide his excitement about the international addition to the IEPA academic faculty and had this to say. “IEPA’s mandate extends beyond the shores of Ghana. The addition of these three astute scholars will enhance IEPA’s teaching, outreach and research programmes in the West African Sub-Region. Additionally, their varied areas of experience will support the enhancement of IEPA’s programmes, student mentorship and theses supervision to enable us continue to graduate global citizens, well-grounded to support the implementation of educational goals globally for sustainable development.”

It is worthy to note that since its establishment and official launch as a UNESCO Category II Centre of Excellence for West Africa, IEPA has been taking bold steps to collaborate with strategic partners, harness research and innovation to boost development and build related capacities. The welcoming of international scholars to join the IEPA team is part of IEPA’s strategy to promote UCC’s internationalization agenda and to network for collaborative work on the priority areas of UNESCO within the West African Sub-Region.

UCC hosts 2021 PANAFEST Colloquium

UCC hosts 2021 PANAFEST Colloquium

The PANAFEST Foundation in collaboration with the University of Cape Coast, and the African Heritage Studies Association (AHSA) has held a three-day PANAFEST Colloquium. The Colloquium was based on the themes, “Securing the African Family: Our Soul, Our Health, Our Wealth'', and “The Future of AHSA and The Youth in The African Liberation Movement”

In an address by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong at the opening ceremony explained that the choice to hold the biennial colloquium was well thought out because Cape Coast had become the gateway for Africans overseas who wished to return home.

“The University of Cape Coast sits on very historic and culturally rich grounds, whose history is intrinsically connected with the histories of all African nations, the histories of the African Diaspora, and the longstanding agenda of the return home of our compatriots,” he said.

He indicated that the University of Cape Coast was collaborating with the African Heritage Studies Association to turn the Centre for African and International Studies into an Institute of Excellence for the Study of Africa and also rename the Centre for the originator of African studies after Dr John Henrik Clarke.

He said, “Moving forward, whilst UCC becomes the centre of choice on the continent for the study of Africa, we will also institute programmes and policies that will solidify Africa’s connections with her branches overseas, such as the Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and other institutions that have cultural ties to the Motherland.”

The Chairman of the Colloquium, Prof. Kwadwo Opoku Agyemang also gave a background history on the PANAFEST celebration. He pointed out that the Pan African Historical Theater Festival had been described as “the grandest artistic vision for uplifting and reuniting African peoples through the arts''.

He further explained that the Colloquium was a deliberative forum that was intended to carve out nurturing spaces for all members of the African family to speak with each other.  even as they dialogue with the world at large.

“This doesn’t mean that we will always agree on the way forward. But it does mean that here, finally, in the African home that we can all share, through the thick and thin of our history, we are home at last and engaging fruitfully with each other, celebrating the gains and wrinkles of our worth for all our sakes, and fretting our future together,” he added.

Giving the keynote address themed Soul to Soul: Pan-African Joy and the Power of the Arts, was Dr Tstsi Jaji, an Associate Professor of English at Duke University.

She noted that Soul to Soul was still relevant, as an essential reference point for the joys and pleasures of cultural encounters and artistic collaborations between Africans on the continent and in the diaspora.

Present at the ceremony were the Registrar, Mr Jeff Teye Nyame, Members of the PANAFEST Foundation, the President, Vice-President, and members of the African Heritage Studies Association, Members of the Local Organising Committee of PANAFEST 2021, Colloquium Planning Committee, Staff, and students of the University.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong paid a working visit to the Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD and his management team on Wednesday, 7th July 2021.

The meeting was one of several that the Vice-Chancellor has paid to cooperate organisations and industries since he assumed office in August 2020. The aim of the visit was to explore areas of possible collaborations between the two organisations for their mutual benefit. The Vice-Chancellor identified research, internship and industrial attachment for students and support to needy but brilliant students as some of the areas for collaboration.

The Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Joseph Boahen Aidoo thanked the Vice-Chancellor for the visit and agreed that there was potential for collaborating in the areas of research to increase production and also production of cocoa products with less sugar.

He indicated that it was possible for COCOBOD to extend a helping hand in the areas of student attachment and internship.

UCC Matriculates Nursing and Midwifery Council PDGE Students

06 Jul, 2021 By DIS

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has matriculated 29 Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Post Diploma Graduate in Education (PDGE) students for the 2020/2021 Academic Year.

Addressing the gathering on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dora Francisca Edu-Buandoh, explained that the ceremony had been organised to receive and matriculate the students who had been admitted into the Post-Diploma in Education programme of the Centre for Teacher Professional Development of the University of Cape Coast.

She indicated that over the years, the Ministry of Health, through the Nursing and Midwifery Council had been considering several ways to train its officers at the national level and Tutors in the various health education institutions to improve the development of the curriculum of health education and also help them to teach effectively.

“In this regard, educators in the sectors are expected to possess some professional attributes which define the characteristics that are readily definable and essential to effective teaching to enhance student learning and achievement. There is, therefore, the need for us to train health workers who would reflect on ways of helping their clients to acquire the best of health services needed to progress in today's complex health environment,” she said

She noted that as a result, the Nursing and Midwifery Council in collaboration with the Center for Teacher Professional Development put together a unique Diploma in Education Programme to train all the regional and national officers of the Council to enhance curriculum development, instructional supervision and above all the assessment of trainee skills and dispositions in the field of health.

The Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Mr. Felix Nyante, encouraged the students to make good use of the opportunity to learn. He stated that the goal was to end paper-based licensure exams and run the exams online. This would be the first time in the history of Africa that a regulatory body would run its exams online and more nations continue to come to us to understudy us, he added.

He praised the collaboration between the University of Cape Coast and the Nursing and Midwifery Council and further stated that the collaboration was not only for transfer of knowledge to NMC graduates but rather empowerment for them have multiple effects on the African region after their studies.

Present at the ceremony were Mr. Jeff Teye Nyame, the Registrar of UCC; Mr. Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye, the Director of Academic Affairs, UCC; Prof. Eugene K. Darteh, the Dean of Students, UCC; and Prof. Eric Anane, the Head of Department of the Centre for Teacher Professional Development, UCC.
