Establish Research Centres for Universities – Prof. Amoako to Gov’t

25 Aug, 2023 By DIS
A Professor of Physical and Materials Science, Prof. George Amoako, has appealed to government to set-up well-equipped research centres for universities in Ghana.

That, according to him, would go a long way to motivate young scientists to undertake cutting-edge research to provide solutions to homegrown problems facing the country.

He explained that the relentless efforts of government to encourage students to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related courses would become a mirage if the unavailability of advanced research laboratories at tertiary institutions was not addressed.

Prof. Amoako made the appeal during his inaugural lecture on the topic: “DNA Origami: Template for Patterning Nanostructures.”

He lamented that scientists conducting compelling research in the country were facing difficulties and those who defied the odds had to collaborate with international partners at their own expense to get practically accurate findings of their theoretical works.

“Locally, people doing advanced research in the sciences go through hell because the equipment are not there. The determined ones must collaborate with international partners at a lot of expense,” added Prof. Amoako.

He added that it was opportune time for the nation to invest into research centres to make Ghanaian students studying STEM education competitive on the global market.

Prof. Amoako stated that DNA Origami approach made use of a long scaffold strand as the imput to self-assemble with a few hundred staple strands into desired shapes.

Sam Jonah Library receives Books from Japan

16 Aug, 2023 By DIS

A non-profit organisation based in Japan, The Nippon Foundation, has presented English books about Japan to the Sam Jonah Library.

The books, worth US$5000, were donated under the “Read Japan” project, which is an initiative launched in 2008 by The Nippon Foundation, with the objective of providing an accurate picture of contemporary Japan to readers all around the world.

Explaining the rationale behind the gesture, the Deputy Head of Mission at the Japan Embassy in Ghana, Mr. Naoki MITORI, observed that the move by the Foundation was to boost reading and learning amongst students and staff of UCC and improve their understanding of Japanese culture, history, politics and people, among others.

He said reading was an integral part of human development and urged students to read widely to broaden their knowledge.

"Now, the younger generation prefers smart phones and social media to reading books. However, the more you read, the more you know," added Mr. MITORI, who made the donation on behalf of the Foundation.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Library, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rosemond Boohene, commended the Japanese Embassy and the Foundation for the kind gesture.

She described the Embassy as an important stakeholder in the realisation of the University's vision of becoming a distinguished academic institution of worldwide acclaim.

Prof. Boohene was optimistic that the donation would  act as a springboard for the UCC to engage in fruitful collaborations with the Embassy in the not-too-distant future.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor seized the chance to eulogise two distinguished Japanese nationals Dr. Hideyo Noguchi for his pioneering medical research in Ghana and Yohei Sasakawa for his big heart towards humanity.

For his part, the University Librarian at the Sam Jonah Library, Dr. Mac-Anthony Cobblah, promised that the Library would ensure the books were put to good use.

The Japanese Embassy delegation was made up of the Public Relations Officer, Ms. Yuriya TERAGAKI, as well as the Assistant Public Relations Officer at the Embassy, Mrs. Prudence Ansah.

16 Aug, 2023 By DIS

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), led a delegation to visit Kyungpook National University (KNU), South Korea from 7th to 11th August, 2023. This was at the invitation of the President of KNU, Won-hwa-Hong, PhD., who visited UCC early this year to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate with UCC as a strategic partner. The visit was to deepen the collaboration and to discuss the implementation of some aspects of the signed MoU.

The UCC delegation was made up of Prof Johnon Nyarko Boampong (Vice chancellor). Mr Emmanuel Jeff Teye Onyame (Registrar), Prof. R. S. Amoah (Dean, School of Sustainable Engineering), Prof. Degraft Acquah (Dean, School of Agriculture) and Dr Samuel Bert Boadi-Kusi (Acting Dean, Office of International Relations).

As part of the implementation of the general MoU signed between the two Universities, two Sub- Memoranda of Understanding were signed during the visit. The first was signed between UCC and KNU NGs Core Facility Centre and the second was signed with the KNU Biological Materials. Under these MoUs, there would be exchange of faculty and training of students at the PhD level through research grants. Collaborative research in the areas of genomic sequencing, soil and plant medicine as well as natural plant products were also to be undertaken through joint grant applications. Under these projects, KNU will make available its equipment and facilities to UCC faculty for data processing and analysis as UCC faculty can send samples from Ghana to KNU for further investigations.

The President of KNU also agreed to facilitate a special scholarship package that will help students and faculty from UCC to undertake their studies at the postgraduate level in KNU,particularly through the KINGS Scholarship. Apart from the special scholarship program, KNU also agreed to take special interest in recruiting potential faculty members from UCC on the KOICA Scholarship programme.

As part of the discussions, KNU also agreed to review the curricular of the School of Sustainable Engineering at UCC and to facilitate the establishment of the School at UCC with equipment and faculty. The School of Agriculture and the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences as well as the Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience were also to benefit from the MoU through joint projects as well as faulty and students’ exchanges.

The delegation was taken on a tour of some companies to familiarize themselves with the nature of work and opportunities available for industrial practice. Key among them were the EcoPro company which produces materials for the manufacture of secondary batteries for cars and other devices and POSCO Steel manufacturing Industry – one of the leading producers of steel globally. UCC students who go on study abroad and exchange programmes would have the opportunity to undertake internships in these companies to broaden their perspectives with industrial practices.

The team also agreed to discuss further on tuition waiver, offering of free accommodation, and provision of stipend to students from both universities who embark on study abroad or exchange programmes between the two universities.
