The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has been ranked as the topmost university in Ghana and West Africa for the third time, according to Times Higher Education (THE).
The annual THE world universities ranking is the only global university rankings league table to judge research-intensive universities based on their five core missions.
Despite the introduction of a stringent methodology by THE, UCC proved its mettle to emerge as a strong institution of higher learning in the 2024 rankings.
In 2022, UCC was ranked as the best in Ghana, West Africa and fourth in Africa, and maintained its position in 2023 World university rankings.
Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, Vice-Chancellor, addressing the press conference
Announcing the enviable feat at a press conference, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, said: “UCC has retained its position as the topmost ranked university in Ghana and West Africa, and among the top 10 (No.7) in Africa. UCC is also the only university in Ghana and West Africa that is in the top 10 ranked Universities in Africa. UCC has also maintained its position as one of the leading research-intensive universities globally.”
“UCC,” he added, “has thus exhibited a trend of sterling performance as a research-intensive university not only in Ghana and Africa but also globally.”
According to him, the feat chalked up by UCC was still unprecedented in the history of any university in Ghana, stressing that: “with this exceptional performance, UCC still remains the only university in Ghana which has achieved this position in West Africa.”
Prof. Boampong maintained that the achievement demonstrated the reputation of the scholarly research outputs of UCC, particularly over the past decade.
“By this feat, UCC has also demonstrated its contribution to higher education and the impact of its scholarly outputs in Ghana, Africa and globally. This highlights the hard work and commitment of our faculty towards engaging in impactful research.” the Vice-Chancellor intimated.
Prof. David Teye Doku, Director of the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Consultancy
He praised the University Council, management, staff, students and stakeholders for their invaluable contributions towards maintaining the enviable position for the third consecutive time.
Prof. Boampong gave the assurance that the University would continue to forge strategic partnerships in the areas of its core mandate to advance the course of its mission and vision.
The Vice-Chancellor enjoined faculty and staff to leave no stone unturned to conduct cutting-edge research that would lead to innovative output which could be commercialised and patented for societal benefits.
“it is also imperative that we improve in other areas where the university ranked low. In particular, we will work to increase the proportion of graduate students, and attract more research grants to increase the research income to make resources available for the provision of the state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research,” he continued.
Prof. Boampong urged all stakeholders to continue to work hard to ensure that UCC maintained its vision of being a global University that was strongly positioned for innovative teaching, research, outreach and professional development.
