School of Nursing and Midwifery instills Proper Time Management in students

14 Jun, 2023 By DIS

The School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Cape Coast is seeking to stimulate significant positive change in the attitude of student nurses and midwives towards time management through targeted activities.

To that end, the School, through the Department of Adult Health, has organised a workshop to inculcate proper time management in students and prevail upon them to discard the mentality of ‘Ghana Man Time’ (Ghanaians’ own time) before they transition into the world of work.

Speaking on the topic, ‘Time Management,’ a Youth Coach and Resident Pastor of Pentecost Students and Associates (PENSA-UCC) , Pastor Frank Akonnor,  underscored the need for  students to demonstrate total commitment to time and its management towards achieving greater things for themselves.

img-20230613-wa0029.jpg

According to him, good time management "leads to profitability and productivity."

He observed that most students waste too much of their time on unnecessary issues that add no value to their lives and, therefore, grew up without achieving their goals.

The Youth Coach added, "It is difficult to count many great achievers and influencers of the world who failed to attach importance to time."

Offering tips on good time management, Pastor Akonnor asked the students to create a daily planner, give each task a time limit, set reminders for all tasks, avoid distractions and establish routines. He said there were enormous benefits of time management, mentioning achievement of goals, increased productivity, and better work-life balance.

EU-CONEXUS to partner up with the Africa Center of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR) of University of Cape Coast (Ghana, Africa)

13 Jun, 2023 By louis Mensah

EU-CONEXUS is proud to announce its new partnership with the Africa Center of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR) of University of Cape Coast (Ghana, Africa). Together, both universities hope to combine resources to pursue and strengthen global research and innovation on smart urban coastal sustainability.

In line with a political vision of constructive EU-AU cooperation

Long term partners, Europe and Africa have developed broad and evolving cooperation across various policy areas such as research and innovation. In 2022, the European Union and the African Union have developed a “Joint Vision for a renewed partnership” which include “actions to preserve the climate, environment and biodiversity, sustainable and inclusive economic growth.” The short term actions of the AU-EU Innovation Agenda (2022) pursue the objective of “strengthening cooperation between AU-EU higher education institutions, research centers and organisations, and capacity building partnerships …(e.g. by involving European University Alliances..)”.

Therefore, this new partnership between EU-CONEXUS and ACECoR will contribute towards achieving these policy objectives as well as building a joint vision for cooperation between the two continents.

“Coastal Management & Resilience” at core: ACECoR and EU-CONEXUS join forces for smart urban coastal sustainability.

Together, EU-CONEXUS and ACECoR wish to develop mobility and exchange programmes for students and staff and strengthen scientific cooperation for sharing knowledge, expertise and technologies on Smart Urban Coastal Sustainability (SmUCS) topics. Indeed, leading research on SmUCS related topics such as coastal geomorphology and engineering, climate change adaptation and mitigation, blue economy, governance and social resilience, disaster risk management and migration or even ecosystems and biodiversity in order to solve and prevent coastal degradation, the Africa Center of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR) of University of Cape Coast plays a major role in providing knowledge for coastal management and resilience in Africa.

Benefiting from the support of international experts and strategic partners (World Bank, University of Liverpool, Department of the USA, National Geographic, The World Academy of Science…), ACECoR seeks excellence in all its work. Created in 2013 the Centre has produced 77 peer-reviewed publications (including 43 verified by World Bank) and is engaged in various locally and internationally funded projects. ACECoR researchers are active members of the Ghanaian scientific review ‘Journal of fisheries and coastal management.”

By joining forces EU-CONEXUS and ACECoR are combining their strengths and knowledge. Both aim at improving their understanding of global coastal risks by sharing the particularities of their respective coastlines, in order to better understand the challenges of smart urban coastal sustainability.

University of Cape Coast in a glimpse

With its Africa Center of Excellence in Coastal Resilience, University of Cape Coastis already a leading actor in Coastal Management in Africa. Ranked amongst the best universities in Africa – #4 university in Africa – and amongst the most influent in terms of research at a global scale (ranked #24 amongst 400), Cape Coast University welcomes 28,451 FTE Students. ACECoR recently received international accreditation for a cluster of 4 of its academic postgraduate programmes in Integrated coastal zone management and fisheries for PhD and masters’ programmes from AQAS e.V. – The Agency for Quality Assurance through Accreditation of Study Programs in higher educations in Germany and overseas.

Just like EU-CONEXUS members, the University of Cape Coastis also very recognized regionally within its territory due to its contributions to collaborative innovations, working alongside NGOs as well as private and public organisations, in order to provide new products, new services, new processes and solutions for the community.

Sharing values and a common mission to act for smart urban coastal sustainability, this new partnership between EU-CONEXUS and ACECoR marks a great step forward in terms of worldwide collaboration on the topic.

Vice-Chancellor, UCC Community Plant Trees to Green Campus

13 Jun, 2023 By DIS

The Vice-Chancellor of University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, with staff and students, has planted seedlings of different species of trees at various places on the University’s campus. The activity formed part of a national tree planting exercise.

Dubbed ‘Green Ghana Day’, the exercise is part of aggressive measures to preserve the country’s forest cover and the environment as well as control climate change and its debilitating impact.

The planted species included timber, wawa, mango, rosewood, militia, memosa, royal palm dwarf amongst others.

This year's exercise is on the theme: ‘Green Ghana: Our Forest, Our Health’.

The Green Ghana Project was introduced in 2021 by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as part of a national afforestation programme to restore the lost forest cover of the country, and to contribute to the global effort of mitigating climate change.

He urged the citizenry to cultivate the habit of planting trees since humans depended on them for survival.

“It is a good exercise and every Ghanaian should support the government so that we can build the Ghana we want”, he said.

The Vice-Chancellor said the University had introduced students to agriculture programmes where a portion of the University’s land had been given to them to cultivate as part of efforts to imbibe in them the spirit of agriculture.

Avoid Risky Sexual Behaviours - Prof. Marfo to young people

09 Jun, 2023 By DIS

Young people have been cautioned against Risky Sexual Behaviours (RSBs) that may expose them to contracting Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and other adverse outcomes, including HIV&AIDS, unintended pregnancies and psychological distress.

A Professor of Social Dimensions of Sexual and Reproductive Health, Prof. Eugene Kofuor Maafo Darteh, who sounded the caution, also catalogued some RSBs he described as "forbidden fruits", as unprotected sex, multiple sexual partners, early marriage, sex under the influence of alcohol and drugs among others.

According to him, if pragmatic measures were not taken to stem the tide of young people "eating of this forbidden fruits, we will have some long term implications" that would shake the foundations of the country's health, wellbeing and education.

Prof. Darteh gave the caution while delivering his inaugural lecture on the topic: " Eaten(ing) the ‘Forbidden’ Fruits: Reflections on Risky Sexual Behaviours among Young Women in Ghana over the last 3 Decades."

img-20230609-wa0094.jpg

Prof. Dartey being robed by the VC-UCC, Prof. Nyarko Boampong (right) and assisted by Director of Public Affairs, Major (rtd) Kofi Baah Bentum.

He noted that the indulgence of young people in RSBs was detrimental to the socio-economic development of the country. In his view, Ghana might not be able to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1- 5 by 2030, as a result of risky sexual behaviours by young people.

"You want to reduce poverty but your population is not going to school. You have a very sick population, how do you reduce poverty?" he asked.

He continued, "If these fruits are eaten and not eaten well, it will affect the health of citizens. The young girls are dropping out of school because they have eaten the forbidden fruits. Then, how do you achieve the target of quality education?"

To Prof. Darteh, the solution for dealing with Risky Sexual Behaviours required collective efforts from all stakeholders to develop the skills and potentials of the energetic young people before their transition into adulthood. This would enable them contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.

img-20230609-wa0096.jpg

Prof. Darteh being congratulated by his mentor, Prof. Kofi Awusabo Asare, a distinguished Professor of Population, Environment and Development.

While calling on adults to serve as role models to the youth and intensify sexual education, Prof Darteh further indicated that young people should not be seen as a homogenous population but as a heterogeneous one in need of protection. He believes such an intervention would avert the unfortunate situation of young people engaging in RSBs at tender ages.

"Prof. Chair, I also advocate for the creation of safe spaces for young people to discuss their reproductive health problems" he added.

Prof. Darteh, who is also the Dean of Students’ Affairs-UCC, called for the adoption of a holistic approach to the promotion of the health and wellbeing of young people in the country.
