Presentation of the international accreditation certificate to ACECoR

ACECoR Receives International Accreditation Certificates for a Cluster of Four Postgraduate Programmes

The Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR), University of Cape Coast has obtained international accreditation for four postgraduate programmes being run with – and hosted by the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (DFAS).

 The accreditation with a validity period of six years was received from the prestigious Agency for Quality Assurance through Accreditation of Study Programmes (AQAS), based in Cologne, Germany.

AQAS is an internationally recognised organisation that provides accreditation for academic programmes in higher education institutions in Europe and other countries. The internationally accredited programmes ACECoR presented to AQAS were Doctor of Philosophy (Integrated Coastal Zone Management); Doctor of Philosophy (Fisheries Science); Master of Philosophy (Integrated Coastal Zone Management); and Master of Philosophy (Fisheries Science).

 The presentation of the certificates follows a rigorous assessment of the programmes by AQAS evaluation team in November 2022.

According to AQAS, ACECoR's “study programmes comply with the requirements defined by the criteria and thus the Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG) and the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) in their current version.”

Presenting the certificate  at a short ceremony in Accra, Commissioner for International Affairs of AQAS, Patrick  Heinzer, commended the Director and his team at ACECoR for sailing through the rigorous academic evaluation exercise.

“Not many institutions across the world succeed in securing international accreditation from us” he revealed.

He noted that ACECoR had shown a strong commitment towards delivering quality education and urged them to implement the recommendation of AQAS to further improve its programmes.

He said the international accreditation was for an initial period of six years (2023-2029).

He entreated ACECoR to maintain its academic and professional standards to provide quality tertiary education not only to Africans but to the world.

Receiving the certificate, the Director of  ACECoR, Prof. Denis W. Aheto, expressed gratitude to AQAS for the honours bestowed on the Centre and the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences  with the latter under the leadership of Prof. Joseph Aggrey-Fynn.

He particularly acknowledged the efforts and contributions of team members both in ACECoR and  the DFAS in the development of the programmes to meet international standards.

Prof. Aheto was optimistic that through similar efforts other postgraduate programmes in the University would be brought on board to receive international accreditation.

“ACECoR has set the pace in the university for pulling through with this rigorous international procedure than spanned two years, and therefore willing to bring its technical competencies to support the university to bring other academic programmes on board” he indicated. He further intimated that, such a feat he hoped would support the university’s efforts towards its internationalisation drive and ranking’. He thanked the World Bank and the Association of African Universities (AAU) for providing the financial support and technical backstopping that made this achievement ultimately possible.

The Dean of School of Graduate Studies, Prof. Sarah Darkwa who was also present at the ceremony said the international accreditation of ACECoR's programmes was another giant feat by the University of Cape Coast. She indicated that the School of Graduate Studies would take steps to ensure that other postgraduate programmes receive international accreditation to further enhance UCC’s reputation among higher education institutions on the continent.

 

IDI-Japan & ACECoR build Capacity of Researchers and Experts on Coastal Erosion

The Infrastructure Development Institute (IDI), Japan,  in collaboration with the Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR), University of Cape Coast, with the support of the World Bank, has organised a short course  on Coastal Management through the Integrated Sediment Management Approach.

The workshop  is in line with an existing partnership aimed at  leveraging on the expertise of both the  IDI and ACECoR to provide West African countries with technical expertise and solutions to coastal degradation, as well as supporting capacity building in West Africa over the medium to long term with knowledge exchange, dialogue, joint research and studies, partnerships, and dialogue mechanisms.

The five-day workshop is being  attended by researchers,  government staffers and students from West African countries who are working on issues related to coastal management, especially coastal erosion.

In his opening remarks,  the Director of ACECOR, Prof. Dennis Aheto,  explained that ACECoR and IDI have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) under the West Africa Coast Areas Management Programme (WACA) to groom the next generation of innovators.

He urged the participants to take full advantage of the five-day training session to learn as much as they could to further build their capacity on Coastal Management through the Integrated Sediment Management Approach.

Prof. Aheto explained that the Centre had been mandated by the University  to run short courses such as Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation in Coastal Areas; Fisheries Management; Geographic Information Systems and Integrated Coastal Zone Management, amongst others.

“In the last four years we have published about 80 research articles and trained nearly 400 professionals across Africa,” Prof. Aheto added.

In addition to the short courses, Prof. Aheto indicated that ACECoR was at the forefront of deepening academic work by introducing postgraduate programmes in Coastal Management with students from 15 African countries.

  “Quite recently, we have introduced a programme Blue Economy, Governance and Social Resilience which is the first of its kind in Africa,” he stated.

Explaining the rationale for the workshop, the President of IDI, Prof. Katsuji Hashiba, said it was to build the capacities of participants in  best practices on sediment management from Japan, West African countries and other parts of the world.

Prof. Hashiba  said the workshop was also to help participants understand coastal erosion and other  environmental issues in the coastal areas from perspective of integrated sediment management.

He further indicated that the short course would equip participants with knowledge to incorporate perspective of integrated sediment management into research works and practices and finding doable solutions.

The short course was a blend of in-person and virtual participation.

    3. organize, develop and deliver a varied range of sporting activities, projects or programmes in the University;
    4. find funding and managing budgets of the Section;

    6. work towards making sport more accessible to everyone in the University; and

                    College of Education Studies-UCC bids farewell to Reeves Scholars

                    The College of Education Studies of University of Cape Coast (UCC) has bid farewell to Reeves Scholars from the Michigan State University, USA.

                    The Reeves Scholars Program (RSP) is a reciprocal exchange between future teachers at Michigan State University (MSU) in the United States and at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in Ghana.

                    It also offers a close-knit learning community and international travel experiences that prepare future teachers to be open-minded, community-engaged, and globally-oriented leaders while strengthening their cross-cultural competence in and beyond their classrooms.

                    At the end of the academic year, all Reeves Scholars will participate in four weeks of high-impact transnational experiences when they visit each other’s countries and campuses in both Ghana and the USA.

                    In a short address, the Provost of the College of Education Studies-UCC, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, said the programme was aimed at building a generation of future teachers who will become global agents. He said the programme seeks to broaden the horizon of students and the College would sustain it to enable other students benefit.

                    He further praised the coordinators of the Reeves Scholars Programme - Dr. Foster Ntow and Dr. Rita Adzovie - for the determination that accompanied their efforts to ensure the visiting students had salutary academic experience in Ghana. He expressed hope that Reeves Scholars from UCC would equally have a good experience in the US.

                    For his part, the Coordinator of the Michigan State University, Dr. Upenyu S. Majee, thanked the College for the hospitality accorded the delegation of US students. He said the relationship between Michigan State University and UCC had become even stronger with the visit of the students to Ghana.

                    To show their love and appreciation to the College for the reception, various gifts were presented to the College. In turn, the College Registrar, Mr. Atta Yeboah-Sarpong, as well as the Reeves Scholars from UCC, also presented kente to the visiting students.

                    ACECoR Staff Member on a Fellowship Programme at CEFAS-UK

                    An Assistant Research Fellow, Mrs Sika Abrokwah, at the Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR),University  of Coast,  has begun a one-month fellowship programme with the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) in the United Kingdom.

                    This fellowship is part of ACECoR’s staff capacity development programme funded by the World Bank. For her fellowship, she is also receiving support from the Ocean Country Partnership Programme (OCPP) which is a UK Government-led programme under the Blue Planet Fund.

                     Through the Ocean Country Partnership Programme, CEFAS, in partnership with Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) and Marine Management Organisation (MMO), provides technical assistance to support countries, including Ghana, to tackle marine pollution, support sustainable seafood practices, and establish designated, well-managed and enforced MPAs.

                    Within the one month, Mrs. Abrokwa will engage in knowledge exchange activities with marine litter experts at CEFAS. She will receive training on automated monitoring tools for marine litter detection as well as microplastic analysis techniques. The skills and knowledge she will acquire from this training will improve and enrich her marine litter research work and strengthen her capacity to develop and implement other projects within this area.

                     

                     

                     

                    2nd World Conference on Transformative Education opens at UCC

                    The second World Conference on Transformative Education has opened at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

                    The three-day conference which has converged academicians across the globe, is on the theme: "The Future of Africa and the Role of Transformative Education." The conference is aimed at seeking solutions to improve the quality of education from kindergarten to higher education.

                    Opening the programme, the Pro Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Rosemond Boohene, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, noted that education had transitioned from the traditional focus of literacy and numeracy to modern trends of skills in critical thinking, information literacy, global awareness, technology literacy, among others. She said Ghana had become aware of the need to adopt these modern trends to produce a generation of educators equipped with 21st century skills to push its national and developmental agenda.

                    In light of this, the Pro Vice-Chancellor said the leadership of education in the country had introduced standard-based curriculum to produce full-fledged students ready for the fourth industrial revolution.

                    Prof. Boohene said it was incumbent on educators to be abreast of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to facilitate effective teaching and learning, stressing that "AI is leading the world."

                    Addressing participants on the topic, "A vision for African Education in the age of Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies", an Associate Professor of Education at the University of North Carolina, USA, Prof. Charles Hutchison, observed that current competitive market forces would compel human beings to save their minds on memory chips in the foreseeable future. According to him, Elon Musk (an American business magnate and investor) had developed Neuralink (implantable brain–computer interfaces) which had two bits of equipment.

                    School of Nursing and Midwifery to develop Addiction Management Programme

                    The School of Nursing and Midwifery of University of Cape Coast and the Syracuse University, USA, are collaborating to develop a postgraduate diploma programme in Addiction Management.

                    The programme, which will be the first of its kind in Ghana, will run both in-person and online modes of delivery. Against this backdrop, a Carnegie African Diaspora Fellow from Syracuse University, Prof. Ignatius N. Ijere, is in UCC to assist faculty of the School of Nursing and Midwifery to develop the programme. 

                    The Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Dr. Nancy Innocentia Ebu Enyan, made the announcement at a ceremony to welcome Prof. Ignatius N. Ijere to the University. She pointed out that addiction is a ‘public health issue globally’ and there was a need to train highly skilled health professionals in its management.

                    "…the programme will be a unique one. So far, I haven't seen any such programme in Ghana so it will be the first... The School of Nursing and Midwifery is proud to partner Syracuse University to introduce this programme in Ghana," an elated Dr. Enyan said.

                    At the ceremony, Prof. Ignatius N. Ijere used the occasion to highlight the importance of an addiction management programme to health workers in Ghana.

                    "This is the first time I am developing this course on the African continent," he announced.

                    Prof. Ijere noted that the programme would arm healthcare professionals with scientific evidence in addiction management to enable them do away with hearsay as regards addiction in the execution of their work.

                    Prof. Ijere is billed to deliver a topic on Addiction Management at a workshop to be organised by the School of Nursing and Midwifery on Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at School of Medical Sciences Auditorium.

                    4.              BASIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

                     

                    Entry requirements for admission into programmes of study for both local and international students include the following:

                     

                    a)     WASSCE/SSSCE:  Applicants should have credit passes in six (6) subjects with overall aggregate of 36/24 at the WASSCE/SSSCE respectively.

                     

                    Three of the six subjects should be in English Language, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science or Social Studies and three must be in relevant electives.

                                            For purposes of admission, a credit pass in:

                    i.   WASSCE means A1 – C6

                    ii.  SSSCE means A – D

                     

                    b)    General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level: Applicants should, in addition to credit passes in five (5) GCE ‘O’ Level subjects (including English and Mathematics), have three (3) passes in the relevant subjects at the Advanced Level.

                     

                    c)     General Business Certificate Examination (GBCE): Applicants should have credit passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects (including English Language and Mathematics) and three (3) relevant elective subjects.

                     

                    d)    International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE): Applicants should have credit passes in five (5) GCE ‘O’ Level subjects (including English and Mathematics) and three (3) passes in the relevant subjects at the Advanced Level.

                     

                    e)     International Baccalaureate (IB): Applicants should have a minimum of grade 4 at the Higher Level in three (3) subjects relevant to the programme of choice (minimum of grade 5 for Health and Allied Sciences). Applicants should, in addition, have a minimum of grade 4 in English/Literature and Mathematics (SL).

                     

                    f)      American High School Grade 12 Examinations. Applicants should have a Final Grade point of 3.0.

                     

                    5.              PRACTICAL EXAMINATIONS FOR B. ED (PHYSICAL EDUCATION) CANDIDATES

                    SSSCE/WASSCE candidates applying for B. Ed (Physical Education) should hold themselves in readiness for a practical examination.  The date for this examination will be communicated in due course.

                    Newspace Africa Conference 2023

                    Reduce dependence on foreign Space Services

                    The Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Cape Coast, Mrs. Julia Selman-Ayetey, has called on African leaders to emphasise the need for significant investment in the African space industry to reduce reliance on foreign space service providers.

                    She made the remarks during the NewSpace Africa Conference 2023 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

                    Outer space is used globally for many aspects of daily life such as national security, agriculture and food security and emergency relief efforts. As a result, she suggested an increase in African-owned and operated space services was crucial to protect the African space ecosystem.

                    Mrs. Ayetey underlined the need for African leaders to take actionable steps, including the implementation of national space law and policy, to create the enabling environment necessary to foster prosperity.

                    The conference was sponsored by the African Union (AU) and Space in Africa and hosted by the government of Côte d’Ivoire.

                    The event brought together industry leaders, academia, national space agencies and other critical stakeholders to share insights and ideas for the growth and development of the African space industry, which is currently valued at $20 billion and expected to surpass $22 billion by 2026.

                    The conference was aimed at addressingopportunities, challenges and trends in the African space and satellite industry to facilitate agenda-setting and nudge stakeholders in the direction of innovative solutions that can revolutionise the African continent for socioeconomic development.
