Master of ScienceDepartment of Management
About Programme: 

Governments face many problems which require a measured, rational approach based on a rigorous analysis of the facts and options. Some of the challenges include: Producing reliable energy, promoting public transport, raising vaccination rates, improving education, tackling alcohol abuse, reducing welfare dependency and curbing cybercrime. The masters in public policy programme will broaden the understanding of the next generation of policy makers and strengthen their capacity to tackle these problems.

Career Opportunities: 

The programme is meant to address the skills gap in prosecuting the developmental agenda of government. Also, the problem of inadequacy of skills to manage the public sector has led to the divestiture of several state assets. In connection with this, the programme will help equip public officers with the technical knowledge of the science of managing and administering public business.

Entry Requirements: 

Admission to the MSc is open to first degree holders with recognised Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an accredited tertiary institution. Candidates with first degree must have, at least, a Second Class Honours. In special cases, an applicant who does not have a first degree or the requisite class, but is otherwise adjudged suitable, may be admitted to the MSc programme.

Foreign Qualification All foreign qualifications would be referred to the National Accreditation Board (NAB) for determination of equivalences and eligibility for admission to the programme.

Progression and Graduation Applicants for the MSc. Programme (Regular or Sandwich) shall have two semesters of course work and a dissertation.

The programmes are run over four (4) Sandwich Semesters and are available to holders of Higher National Diploma or its equivalent who obtained Second Class Lower Division or better and with two years’ working experience.

Applicants should ensure that the following documents are submitted together with their application forms.

  • A certified academic transcript showing semester by semester GPA and FCGPA
  • A certified copy each of NAPTEX certificate and Result slip.

Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations, West African Senior School Certificate Examination and General Business Certificate Examination:   Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination  (SSSCE) Candidates must obtain passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects, comprising three core subjects, including Core English Language and Core Mathematics, Integrated Science or Social Studies. Candidates must also have passes in any three relevant elective subjects.

West African Senior School Certificate Examination ​Candidates must obtain passes (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising, three core subjects including Core English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science, or Social Studies.  Candidates must also have passes in any three relevant elective subjects.  General Business Certificate Examination ​Candidates with credit passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects including English Language and Mathematics plus three (3) relevant elective subjects would be eligible for admission into level 100.   General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level Candidates: Passes in three (3) subjects (at least, one of the passes should be Grade D or better), Also the applicant must have had credit passes (Grade 6) in five GCE Ordinary Level subjects, including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject (for non-science students).   Higher National Diploma Candidates Applicant must have graduated with a good Higher National Diploma (HND) certificate (i.e. at least 2nd Class Lower Division). In addition, the applicant must have acquired a 2-year post-HND qualification working experience. Candidates with Higher National Diploma in Secretaryship and Management Studies and Marketing may be admitted to Level 300.  Other HND holders with at least Second Class may be admitted to Level 200.   Other Diploma qualifications from elsewhere assessed to be equivalent to HND may be similarly considered.   Advanced Business Certificate Examination (ABCE) & Advanced Business Certificate Candidates  Candidates with full Diploma Certificate in ABCE must have had credit passes in five (5) subjects, including English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science or Social Studies in the General Business Certificate Examination (GBCE) or Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations, or West African Senior School Certificate Examination. ABCE candidates may be considered for admission at level 200 of a degree programme.   Mature Candidates The applicant must be at least 25 years old, and show proof of age with birth certificate or any legitimate documentary proof of date of birth, which is, at least 25 years old at the time of application. For admission into chartered institutions, applicant must pass Mature Students' Entrance Examinations conducted by the institution itself (English Language, Mathematics and an Aptitude Test).             Professional Certificate Holders Candidates with Diploma in Professional Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) may be admitted to level 300. Other relevant professional qualification from accredited bodies may be considered.   Foreign Qualification All foreign qualifications would be referred to the National Accreditation Board (NAB) for determination of equivalence and eligibility for admission to the programme.

About Programme: 

Ghana is an emerging market with new financial institutions coming up. These financial institutions will need middle and top level managers to man them. The purpose of the programme is to train people who will take up these roles in the financial institutions. In addition, the services of financial experts will be needed by all organisations in the country. The programme aims at providing people with the requisite skills to fill the vacancies in these organisations.   The country needs people with expertise in finance who have the necessary skills to make meaningful contributions to policy formulation, implementation and evaluation. The programme will produce graduates with comprehensive knowledge of the main concepts and analytical skill needed in the design, implementation and evaluation of specific problems of development finance.

Career Opportunities: 

The overall goal of the programme is to provide business education aimed at developing accounting personnel and managers with the requisite knowledge, skills, attitudes and abilities in the prudent management of funds in the private and public sectors of the economy.

Objectives of the Programme 

Having completed the programme, the graduate will:

1. be equipped with the requisite knowledge, skills, attitudes and abilities required for the prudent management of funds; 

2. be able to prepare and present financial reports in accordance with the relevant Accounting Standards (i.e. International Financial Reporting Standards), and in line with the institutional, legal  and regulatory framework in Ghana; 

3. be provided with opportunities for career development and advancement in the field of accountancy; 

4. gain global significance and work efficiently and effectively in any part of the globe; and 

5. develop entrepreneurial spirits coupled with confidence, innovativeness, creativity and a hunger for success in their chosen discipline.

Components of the programme

This is a four-year degree programme, made up of course work and a project work. The first year of the programme would focus on University-wide courses. The second year courses focus largely on Faculty-wide and departmental courses. The major finance courses (electives courses) starts from Level 300.

Students offering Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) would undergo two (2) months industrial attachment during two separate long vacations (Level 200 and 300). The purpose is to expose the students to real work situations to enable them better appreciate the principles and concepts taught in the lecture room.

Entry Requirements: 

Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations, West African Senior School Certificate Examination and General Business Certificate Examination:

About Programme: 

The master's programme will be run for three (3) sandwich semesters spanning over 24 months.A sandwich semester will be between the months of June and July and last for eight (8) weeks.The programme comprises of 14 courses.The courses of the programme are designed to develop skills in a number essential areas of accounting and these will be delivered through case studies,lectures,seminars and group discussions.In addition,students will be required to submit a dissertation.

Career Opportunities: 

The programme is set to equip students with managerial competence and skills required to deal with the current complex accounting issues in organisations. The philosophy behind the programme is to develop middle and top level accounting executives who have the ability to manage complex accounting situations, develop skills and competencies that enable them to make decisions in uncertain or ambiguous situations. The MCom (Accounting) degree programme is intended to encourage students to build upon their marketing skills as well as exercise the powers of innovation and creativity in developing their accounting careers.

Entry Requirements: 

A First Degree candidate seeking admission to the MCom programme must: 1. Have obtained a good first degree (at least, a Second Class) in an appropriate field of study from a recognized academic institution. 2. Submit an official transcript of academic record 3. Submit, at least, two reference reports, one of which must be from a former lecturer. 4. Submit a proposal of 2-3 pages on the intended area of study, including a bibliography. 5. Satisfy any additional requirement prescribed by the College/Faculties/Schools/Institutes/Departments. These may include relevant work experience, a written entrance examination and/or an interview.

A Non-researched Master’s Degree candidate seeking admission to the MPhil/MCom programme must: 1. Have obtained a CGPA of 2.5 or better in the master’s course work. 2. Submit an official transcript of academic record. 3. Submit, at least, two reference reports, one of which must be from a former lecturer. 4. Submit a proposal of 2-3 pages on the intended area of study, including a bibliography. 5. any additional requirement prescribed by the College/Faculties/Schools/Institutes/Departments. These may include relevant work experience, a written entrance examination and/or an interview.

A master’s degree holder in areas other than business will be required to take relevant courses in the chosen area of specialization. A successful applicant will be offered probationary admission as Postgraduate Research Student (PRS) for the first semester of the first year. Students may progress to the thesis phase in the second semester of the first year after having satisfied the following conditions:   (i) Taken and passed all requisite background courses as may be prescribed by the Department.   (ii) Successfully defended a research proposal before a Departmental Examining Panel.

About Programme: 
In almost every organisation, whether private or public sector, the work of accountants is very useful to provide accountability over their stewardship. Additionally, as a nation, there is shortage of qualified accounting personnel. Graduates from this programme will feed in as accounting personnel and managers in both private sector and public sector organisations. 

The philosophy of this programme is therefore to provide business education aimed at developing accounting personnel and managers with the requisite knowledge, skills, attitudes and abilities in the prudent management of funds. It is also aimed at developing individuals who are capable of demonstrating analytical and critical thinking skills.

Target Group

The programme is designed for: engineers, scientists and other technical officers who require managerial training in the oil and gas industry, investors in oil and gas industries and related sectors, lawyers, the financial institutions, consulting firms, public and civil servants, NGOs, activist groups, and environmentalists, media practitioners, graduates from relevant disciplines who want to pursue careers in the oil and gas Industry can apply.

Programme Structure: This is a three sandwich semester programme leading to MBA Oil and Gas Management degree.
