Career Opportunities: 

The objective of this program is to provide students with knowledge in the practice and emerging trends in communication for the oil and gas industry and to equip students with practise-based skills necessary to design, critique and implement appropriate and effective communication strategies for the industry. The programme will also help students to build appropriate arguments about issues emerging from the oil and gas industry.

Entry Requirements: 

Candidates seeking admission to the MA. degree programme must:

have obtained a good first degree (at least a second class) in an appropriate field of study from a recognized university/analogous institution. Submit an official transcript of academic record. Submit at least two reference reports, one of which must be from a former lecturer. Pass a selection interview. Satisfy any additional requirements prescribed by the faculties/departments/institute

 

Target Group

The programme is designed for: communication practitioners, administrators in the oil and gas industry, public relations officers for energy companies, mass media and journalists, Non-Governmental Organizations and graduates who want to build careers in the oil and gas industry.

About Programme: 

MSc. Microfinance is a unique programme that is solely offered by the Department of Economics, UCC to train microfinance practitioners both in the country and in the West African sub-region at the University of Cape Coast.   The programme offers students the opportunity to appreciate the challenges confronting microfinance in Sub-Saharan Africa and develop strategies to deal with the challenges. It also offers the opportunity to develop capacity in teaching, research and outreach in microfinance.

Students who graduate with MSc. Microfinance are usually absorbed by the booming microfinance industry and other financial institutions in the country.

Entry Requirements: 

First degree holders (at least a second class lower division award) with professional experience in any of the following related areas: finance, banking and any other social science subject area. Potential participants without a first degree but who possess professional and other related qualification will be assessed by the Department for consideration into the programme.

About Programme: 

The Ph.D. Economics programme at the University of Cape Coast is designed for students who wish to undertake advanced study and conducting original research in Economics. It is a three-year programme. During the first two semesters, students are required to take a Faculty compulsory course (Philosophical foundations of Social Sciences), Research Methods and some other courses that may be recommended by the supervisor of the student in consultation with Departmental Board. Students after successfully passing the above stated courses then proceed to write their thesis which must be based on original research and represent a major contribution to the body of Economic knowledge.

About Programme: 

MPhil Economics is a two-year graduate programme designed to provide advance level training in Economics. Student admitted to pursue MPhil Economics would be required to do one course work and one year of thesis writing. The first year course work provides students with advance training in theoretical Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematical Economics and Econometrics. In addition, students have the option of choosing one elective course in either of the following areas: Financial Economics, Development Economics, Labour Economics, Agricultural Economics, Environmental Economics, etc.

The kind of training received in the first year of this programme is analogous to the first two years of a PhD programme at the best US universities. Thus MPhil Economics provides a solid foundation for progressing to the PhD programme at University of Cape Coast or elsewhere.

Since the Department of Economics is member of the African Economics Research Consortium (AERC), students admitted to read MPhil Economics are sent to Nairobi, Kenya from June to September every year to participate in the AERC’s Joint Facility for Electives (JFE). Students who participate in this programme get the opportunity to take two additional elective courses which tend to broaden their horizon. The participation of students in the JFE programme is fully sponsored by AERC.

The MSc Economics programme is intended to train economists in advanced theory and methods, mainly for policy analysis and economic management within government, and the private sector. Hence, MSc (Economics) at the Department of Economics provides a very good foundation in core economic disciplines such as Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics and Mathematics. The MSc (Economics) provides an excellent foundation for a career as a professional economist.  A number of graduates have gone on to distinguished careers in Economics or related fields.The programmes is a one year programme that consist of course work and a research component.

To be admitted to this programme, candidates must possess a good Honors degree in Economics or in a related discipline.

About Programme: 

BA Economics is a four-year degree programme that provide students with a strong foundation and understanding of core microeconomic and macroeconomic theory. The programme is enriched by the provision of empirical skills that are key to applying economic thinking in our increasingly data-driven world. Besides the rigorous training in both theory and econometrics, students are given the opportunity to select elective courses from a wide range of electives in economics to fit their likely targets of interest, ranging from Labour market issues, Health Economics, Environmental Economics, Financial Economics to Development Economics, and many more.

Career Opportunities: 

Social Science is the study of society, and the relationships that exist among people in a society. In this programme, Economics, which is a major aspect of social science, is the main focus. Economics is concerned about the study of management of scarce resources. It examines the production, sale and use of goods and services. Other aspects of social science including sociology and geography are also studied. Economics examines how people, communities, companies and countries apportion the resources available to them as they attempt to meet their insatiable needs. Students are taught how to plan and prioritise the use of available resources. Whether operating a business, running a community, governing a nation, or managing one’s personal life, a more than an average knowledge in economics is vital. Students are taught to be analytical in their thinking, critical in their examination of micro and macroeconomic situations, and are equipped with the skills to be able to accurately project what an economy would look like in months or years to come.

Entry Requirements: 

The Minimum Admission Requirement into the University of Cape Coast for WASSCE applicants is aggregate 36.  For SSSCE applicants, the minimum requirement is aggregate 24. Candidates must have credit passes in six (6) subjects with overall aggregate of 36/24 at the WASSCE/SSSCE respectively.  Three of the six subjects must be core subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science or Social Studies and three must be in relevant electives (which must include Economics and Elective Mathematics).

Career Opportunities: 

The programme is structured to run for a minimum 3-year period, comprising six semesters of research work in Pasture and Range Management leading to a production of a thesis. There will also be guided reading, participation and presentations at seminars. Candidates may be required to register for designated courses like Research Methods, Experimental Design and Data Analysis, Proposal Writing, and any other courses under the MPhil programme, if deemed necessary. Otherwise, candidates whose background is deemed to be adequate will be exempted from taking MPhil courses.

 

Entry Requirements: 

A candidate seeking admission into the PhD programme must:

  • Have an MPhil degree in Animal Science or related field from a recognized University.
  • Candidates with M.Sc. degree (by taught course) in an Animal Science related field wishing to enroll onto the MPhil programme will be required to take additional courses and present a thesis.
  • Submit an official transcript of academic record.
  • Submit at least three reference reports, one of which must be from a former lecturer.
  • Submit a proposal of 3-5 pages of intended area of study including a working bibliography.
  • Pass a selection interview
  • Satisfy any additional requirements prescribed by the department.

Career Opportunities: 

The aim of the programme is to produce graduates who are adequately equipped with critical and analytical skills in order to meet the educational, administrative and other resource needs of the country; and extension and consultancy services to the global community.

The goals of the programme are to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to improve their analysis of peace and security as well as skills in the analysis of social justice and human rights.

Entry Requirements: 

The M.A. (Sandwich) programme is open to all individuals who qualify by admission requirements irrespective of discipline.

The admission requirements are as follows: A candidate seeking admission to the MA degree programme in Sociology of Peace and Security (Sandwich) must:

i. Have obtained a good first degree (at least a Second Class lower division) in any field of study from a recognized university.

ii. Diploma in relevant field or areas related to Peace and Security. In addition, the person should be 35 years or above with relevant working experience.

iii. Submit an official transcript of academic record. iv. Submit at least two reference reports, one of which must be from a former lecturer.

v. Satisfy any additional requirements prescribed by the Faculty or Department. These may include relevant work experience, a written entrance examination and an interview.

Career Opportunities: 

The B.Sc. (Agriculture) programme has existed with the inception of the School. It has been reviewed twice in response to changing needs of consumer demand and world market situations. Since the last review in 2003, the agricultural sector worldwide has seen even more technological changes driven primarily by the ICT revolution and the advent of challenges such as Climate Change, Biotechnology, Organic Farming, Post-harvest losses, Food Safety and Quality Standards, Value Chain Agriculture, Animal Welfare and Precision Agriculture. To make the School’s products stay competitive, there is the need to once again review the existing curriculum to take care of these current, as well as other emerging trends and threats to agricultural production. This will at the same time help to keep our graduates knowledgeable and therefore more marketable after school. The School of Agriculture seeks to address the challenge to revive and modernize agriculture in Ghana through offering leadership in manpower training and development at the research, extension and production levels. This review will provide an innovative, competitive, exciting and enhanced new curriculum that emphasizes practical-based training and skills development in the agricultural sciences, entrepreneurship and agribusiness management, and effective communication for all its graduates.

Goals of the Programme The main goal of the B.Sc. (Agriculture) programme is to produce graduates who are academically skilled, professionally competent and innovative enough to respond to emerging challenges in agriculture and related sectors, and therefore be more marketable.

The programme offers students the opportunity to:

  • acquire requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes to effectively deal with existing and emerging challenges of the agricultural sector
  • deepen students’ appreciation of current market/consumer demands and standards, and how these impact on production principles
  • obtain solid grounding in scientific/technical principles and the practical experience in agriculture
  • develop strong leadership, interpersonal, team-building and entrepreneurial skills needed to identify and utilize opportunities in the sector, and
  • get committed to implementation of Ghana’s vision for sustainable utilization of its agricultural and natural resources.
Entry Requirements: 

WASSCE and SSCE Holders The School of Agriculture offers a 4-year general B.Sc. Agriculture programme for applicants coming in with a WASSCE or SSCE background. To qualify for admission into the programme: Candidates must possess Credit passes (C6 for WASSCE and D for SSCE) in the 3 Core subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science/Social Studies) and 3 Elective subjects; In addition, candidates must have Credit passes in three (3) Elective Subjects under any of the options listed below:

OPTION ONE: General Agriculture, Chemistry and any one other Science/Agriculture subject OPTION TWO: Chemistry, Biology and Physics/Elective Mathematics OPTION THREE: Any three subjects from the following Agricultural Science Electives – General Agriculture, Crop Husbandry and Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Forestry.

Candidates applying under Option Three will, as a School requirement, be considered for admission only after they pass a 6-week Remedial Science Programme organized by the University of Cape Coast during the long vacation period preceding the start of the academic year. The overall aggregate for 6 subjects, under all the options, must not exceed 36 (WASSCE) or 24 (SSCE).Post-Diploma Applicants The School of Agriculture also offers a 3-year Post-Diploma programme leading to the award of a B.Sc. (Agriculture) degree. Successful applicants join the regular B.Sc. (Agriculture) class at Level 200. To qualify for admission into the programme, candidates must satisfy all of the following requirements: Possess a Diploma in Agriculture or a related field, from a recognized University or Polytechnic Must have Credit passes (WASSCE or SSCE) in English Language and Mathematics; OR should have passed the Mature Entrance Examinations organized by the University of Cape Coast.

In addition, candidates are expected to pass a selection interview.Candidates must include with their completed Application Forms, certified copies of all certificates and academic transcripts relevant to their application for verification purposes.
