Participants and dignitaries after the launch of Ghana Society of Sports and Exercise Psychology

Ghana Society of Sports and Exercise Psychology (GHASSEP) Launched at UCC

05 Dec, 2018 By louis Mensah

The Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation in collaboration with the International Society of Sports and Exercise Psychology has launched the maiden Ghana Society of Sports and Exercise Psychology (GHASSEP).

The ceremony was under the theme “Embracing Sport and Exercise Psychology Application for Optimal Performance and General Well-being in Ghana”.

Speaking at the ceremony the Special Advisor to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Owusu Ansah, assured that government would support GHASSEP. “It is a worthy step to bridge academia and industry”, he noted. He lamented that sports in Ghana has developed at a slow pace. “The level of development is not established by the results attained in performances”, he argued.

Dr. Ansah called on government and other key players to collaborate towards changing the status quo in the Ghanaian Sports industry. He lamented about the fact that research conducted by academia were being left on the shelves of libraries instead of being useful to the development of the Sports. He urged academia to engage stakeholders through research dissemination so that they could make recommendations for implementation to improve sports.

Sharing his thought on the psychological problem being faced by the Black Queens at the ongoing Africa Women’s Cup of Nations tournament, he noted that the Minister of Youth and  Sports has admitted that if stakeholders  like the University of  Cape Coast  were to have been involved in the preparatory stages, the situation would have been avoided.

The Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology Education, Prof.  Joseph K. Mintah, used the opportunity to call on government to engage the service of experts in the field of Sports Psychology at the preparation stages and during tournaments. “What prevents us from using our experts? Why do we have to wait until we have crisis?” he queried.  “As l speaks Ghana Black Star has no sport psychologist attached to it”, he lamented.

He stated that Sports Psychologists must be involved at the early stages because their interventions would not work overnight as they involved various processes. “Ghana should count itself blessed to have handful of sport psychologists in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation of UCC who are dedicated to training more psychologists”, he noted.

The Vice President of the International Society of Sport Psychologist, Prof. Tatiana Ryba, was worried about the low representation of Africa in the Society adding that “it is only a Nigerian that represented Africa in the Society”. She, however, expressed the hope that with the creation of GHASSEP the situation would change for better. “I hope with the creation of GHASSEP there will be enough collaboration at the African level to be able to get a voice to the global world”, she stated.

The Head, Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, Dr. Daniel Apaak, revealed that socio-cultural factors influence Sports Psychology consultation services. “Reasons that have been adduced to explain this apparent lack of receptiveness to sport psychology consulting by male athletes are perceived stigmatization associated with sport psychology consulting, having less confidence and less personal openness towards Sports Psychology” he noted. According to him, some athletes preferred working with a consultant of the same race or ethnicity. He explained that these social norms and stereotypes dictate that male athletes should be tough and masculine, and should not exhibit or disclose any emotional problems. He stated that cultural influences were major blockades to the success of Sport Psychologists, and therefore, must be factored into their services as it played important role.

Dr. Apaak called on stakeholders to join forces to project Sports Psychology in the country. “The purpose of launching this Society is to provide a platform for all stakeholders in Ghana to come together to ensure that our athletes are given the best psychological support necessary to excel in their chosen sports”, he noted.

The National President of the Psychological Association of Ghana, Dr. Erica Danfrekua Dickson, entreated Sports Psychologists to join the Association.

Barclays Bank Exposes Students to Entrepreneurial Skills

Barclays Bank Exposes Students to Entrepreneurial Skills

28 Nov, 2018 By louis Mensah

Barclays Bank in collaboration with the Students’ Representative Council has held a seminar on Entrepreneurship for students of the Univeristy.

The seminar dubbed “ReadytoWork” formed part of Barclays Bank’s corporate social responsibility to the University.

Speaking on how to become a successful entrepreneur, Mr. John Siade from Barclays Bank, said there were numerous opportunities for students to engage in meaningful ventures that would earn them income. He noted that what was required of was for them to identify a problem around and identify solutions to solve them. “Business opportunities are everywhere. You have to look for them and also create them”, he noted.

Mr. Siade noted that if they wanted to succeed, they should not wait for opportunities to come to them adding that, “look for the ordinary things and turn them to make money”. According to him, to become a successful entrepreneur, one must be self-disciplined, determined, purpose-driven, clever, motivated, and excellent at creating opportunities for making money.

He noted that preparation was a key to any successful entrepreneurship. “If you fail to plan it means you are planning to fail”, he stated.  He advised them always start a business with a plan as a guide. According to him one way for them to succeed was to do a thorough research about the business idea they want to implement.

Mr. Siade advised potential entrepreneurs to desist from the common habit of waiting to develop a perfect product before hitting the market. “Many entrepreneurs believe they have to perfect their product before the world sees it”, he observed. “Build the product, put it on the market and develop it based on customers’ feedback”, he encouraged. He asked them to recognize their weakness and learn how to build their business on their own from other successful people.

He admitted that as an entrepreneur they were bound to face challenges however they must face it without stopping. “When things get tough get back to your purpose and you will get the courage to continue”, he noted. He also advised students to dream big.

The seminar was introduced four years ago to help eradicate the canker of fresh graduates getting stranded in the world of work. It has two aspects that focused on how to get job as a fresh graduate and how to create employment themselves.

Indian High Commissioner Calls on Vice-Chancellor

28 Nov, 2018 By louis Mensah

The High Commissioner of India to Ghana, His Excellency, Shri Birender Singh Yadav, has called on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah.

The visit was a follow up of UCC’s collaboration with Gujarat Forensic Sciences University (GFSU), India.

Appreciation to GFSU

Welcoming the High Commissioner and his delegation, Prof. Ampiah, expressed  gratitude, to GFSU for its commitment towards the collaboration which according to him would lead to training professionals to provide evidence-based forensic investigations in the country. He added that “though our Department is young, we can learn from your experiences and Gujarat can also benefit through this partnership”. He commended India’s effort to support Ghana through grants to undertake development projects.  He was excited about the level of involvement of GFSU and the Indian High Commission in Ghana in the collaboration, adding that “A lot has been done within a short possible time”.

Importance of the Collaboration

His Excellency Mr. Yadav said they needed to establish the collaboration quickly because of the long-standing historic friendship between India and Ghana. “Through this partnership, our students and security personnel will be trained in various Forensic Sciences disciplines and we will be able to learn from each other for a common goal,” he said. He assured the Vice Chancellor that they donate cultural and history books to the University’s Library.

The Indian High Commissioner to Ghana said it was a great opportunity for UCC to have the collaboration with Gujarat Forensic University for the Forensic Sciences programme because currently Gujarat has a reputable international market level of training police officers in about 45 countries across the world. He also assured the Vice-Chancellor that they were committed to support UCC to run the programme effectively and efficiently.

UCC GFSU Collaboration

It would be recalled that the University of Cape Coast signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GFSU in 2017 in India. The agreement among other provisions was to strengthen the capacity of faculty members in UCC’s Department of Forensic Sciences and advanced training opportunities for Ghanaian students in the field of forensics. A key feature of the agreement was GFSU’s commitment to establish an Institute of Forensic Sciences at UCC.

GFSU is the world’s first and only University dedicated to Forensics and Allied Sciences, with an objective of training forensic experts to meet their increasing demand in India and globally. GFSU is a state university with advanced and specialised postgraduate academic programmes.

Indian High Commissioner to Ghana was accompanied by the Head, Department of Forensic Sciences, Dr. Richmond Afoakwa and other lecturers from the Department.

UCC Builds Capacity of Tutors in Nursing & Midwifery Training Colleges

27 Nov, 2018 By louis Mensah

The Institutional Affiliation Office (IAO) has begun series of workshops to build the capacities of tutors in Nursing and Midwifery Training Colleges (NMTC) across the country offering Diploma in Midwifery for Post Nurse Assistant Clinicals and Nurse Assistant Preventive (NAC/NAP) students.

The workshops which are being held in the various campuses of the Colleges are aimed at building the capacities of tutors in Assessment to improve their instructions in the classroom and helping students to learn.

Addressing participants, the Head of IAO, Mr. Justice Agyenim Boateng, said the workshop has become necessary because UCC would be awarding Diploma to the students, hence the tutors would need certain skills to enhance their teaching and assessment of the students.  He noted that the University would expect the tutors to conduct continuous assessment which constituted 40 per cent whiles the final examinations would be scored 60 per cent. “We have entrusted 40 per cent out of the100 per cent total score of the students into your hands and we want to be sure that you assess the students based on their performance in assignments and quizzes you conduct and not just giving them marks they don’t deserve,” he emphasised.

Mr. Boateng said the programme could achieve its objectives if the tutors applied what they were going to be taught at the workshop. He noted that UCC would not compromise on its quality standards, and therefore, they should take the workshop serious. “After the workshop, students should see some improvements in the way you handle your lessons and this should influence their learning” he noted. He said the calibre of students they were teaching have been working and needed to be encouraged to learn and acquire the relevant knowledge and skills to progress professionally and academically. “These students are your junior colleagues who have been disadvantaged for a long time so you need to help them to excel on the programme” he urged them.

He noted that the University had outlined several workshops to build their competence in the areas of teaching and research. He said the University would soon introduce M.Phil programmes in Nursing and Midwifery which the tutors could take advantage to enrol. He added that discussions were ongoing to also run a Bachelor of Science programme in Midwifery on sandwich basis for Diploma holders in some selected NMTCs.

The resource persons for the workshop were Dr. Godwin K. Aboagye and Dr. Kofi Acheaw Owusu. They took the tutors through “Types of Assessment (Feedback Mechanisms), Learning Outcomes/Blooms Taxonomy of Cognitive Learning, Multiple Choice Items” and Essay Type Questions. Other topics included Effective Project Work Supervision, Table of Specification (TOS), Preparation of Marking Schemes and Rubrics and Preparation of Course Outline”.

Tutors from Cape Coast, Twifo Praso, Agogo , Asamang SDA and Mampong NMTCs participated in the first phase of the workshop.

World Bank to support UCC-CCM as Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience

26 Nov, 2018 By louis Mensah

The University of Cape Coast's Centre for Coastal Management has been conditionally selected as one of the five new Centres of Excellence in Ghana under the World Bank’s African Centre of Excellence (ACE) IMPACT III Project. The upgrade of the Centre to the status of Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR) will receive a proposed funding amount of US$5,861,700.00 from the World Bank and Government of Ghana to scale up and expand on its present focus on applied research, technical professional training and policy engagement to include short courses and postgraduate (PhD and Masters) education of Ghanaian and regional students in key new areas to address coastal degradation issues that are fundamental to economic growth of the sub-region.

The call for proposal, which was opened to all universities in West and Central African countries, was rolled out by the Association of African Universities (AAU) and the Regional Facilitation Unit (RFU) of the Africa Centres of Excellence (ACE) Project, with support from the World Bank, under the ACE for Development Impact (ACE Impact) Project. Funding for the ACE Impact project is from the World Bank and Agence Francaise de Developpement (AFD).

ACECoR will give impetus for UCC to embrace more multidisciplinary approach to address the issues of coastal resources degradation by strengthening the resilience of coastal areas particularly in Western and Central Africa both biologically and economically. Attention will be given to enhancing research and training of young scientists and the next generation of African professionals to be supported through scholarships, exposure to industry experiences based on internships and conference participation. The Project will introduce institutional Post Doc opportunities and will attract Post Doc’s from within the region especially from Francophone Countries with priority on female candidates.

The research and academic programs will focus on Coastal engineering (design of adaptation solutions for coastal risk reduction); Forestry engineering for nature-based solutions; Maritime Meteorology and Ocean Hydrology Modeling; Natural Capital Accounting; Coastal Zone Land-use Planning; including issues related to Blue Economy and Social Resilience.

ACECoR was selected after an independent team of evaluators, consisting of members from in-country panel of reviewers at the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) and other African educational and scientific community supported by diaspora and global technical experts, reviewed 105 proposals that were submitted to the RFU by higher education institutions from the participating countries. Proposals were subjected to several stages of evaluation, including (i) desk reviews; (ii) external evaluation by a subject matter specialist; and (iii) a site and leadership evaluation of shortlisted proposal sites to ascertain the readiness of the institutions in terms of governance, leadership and infrastructure.
