Bacterial Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when the antibiotics used to treat infections caused by pathogenic bacteria are no longer effective. Klebsiella pneumoniae ((Kpn) is among the six leading bacteria associated with AMR. Kpn is highly virulent and is associated with both community and hospital-acquired infections.
The generation of genomic data using next-generation sequencing, analysis, interpretation, and use of genomic data to provide accurate data contributing to AMR surveillance is lacking in Africa. Therefore this workshop series aims to build the capacity of researchers and laboratory scientists for Nanopore sequencing and genomic data analysis through a series of seminars and hands-on training workshops using Kpn data. Further, training on a sustainable platform for long-read sequence analysis via the Cloud Infrastructure for Microbial Bioinformatics (CLIMB) facility will be provided.
