Workshop Held for Lecturers and Postgraduate Students on Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

05 Feb, 2020 By louis Mensah

The Directorate of Research, Innovation and Consultancy (DRIC) in conjunction with the Data Science Unit of the School of Agriculture,  has organised a three-day workshop on Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

The workshop which was attended by faculty members from the University and postgraduate students was aimed at promoting good and objective management of research data to inform policy.

Systematic Review Key aspect of Data Management

Opening the workshop, the Dean of the School of Agriculture, Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako, said Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis was the current approach in conducting research that every academic, especially those in science-related disciplines should understand. He indicated that in recent times all disciplines were adopting this approach because of its encompassing nature in reviewing and analysing results. “Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis is, therefore, a key aspect of data management and the best way to go,” he noted.

 Prof. Asare-Bediako indicated that data management was very crucial in research, dissemination of knowledge, and informing policies and as a result, the School of Agriculture established the Data Science Unit to serve as a databank for faculty and students. He called on participants to take the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the concept.

Groundbreaking Experience

On his part, the  Director of DRIC, Prof.  Frederick Ato Armah said the workshop would serve as a groundbreaking experience for lecturers and postgraduate students who were yet to familiarise themselves with the concept.  He noted that in terms of hierarchy, Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis provided very credible evidence to inform policy. “This is because it eliminates bias with quality control and it builds confidence in the results or findings of the research work,” he stressed.

Prof. Armah said one of DRIC’s mandate was to build the capacity of staff and students of the University hence it’s partnership with the Data Science Unit to organise the workshop.  He indicated that the topics outlined for the workshop would help participants to share ideas to advance their careers as academics.

Relevance of the Workshop

A Senior Lecturer of Plant Physiology and Crop Improvement at the Department of Crop Science, Dr. Michael Osei Adu noted that the course was intended for postgraduate students, faculty and research fellows who have demonstrated interest in scientific reviews and meta-analysis and would like to learn their methodologies. Dr. Adu who was a facilitator at the workshop was confident that postgraduate students would employ the concept in the Literature Review Sections of their thesis. The workshop addressed Systematic reviews and Meta-analysis through lectures, group discussions, and activities.

According to Dr. Adu, “Research evidence synthesis is the review of primary research on a given topic with the purpose of integrating the findings, creating generalizations and resolving uncertainties.” He explained that evidence synthesis enabled researchers to search for and bring together all relevant information on a given research question in order to establish an evidence base to guide best-practice, identify knowledge gaps, or inform policy.

Importance of Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis

Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis are powerful statistical methodologies used for synthesising research evidence across independent studies. “Unlike narrative reviews, Systematic reviews allow qualitative analyses, and when combined with Meta-analysis, allow quantitative analyses of the magnitude of effects and have a high degree of objectivity because they are based on a standardized set of procedures” he added. He further explained that Systematic reviews and Meta-analysis were originally developed in Medicine and Social Sciences, but were now widely applied in areas such as Ecology, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.

Speakers for the workshop include a Senior Lecturer of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Dr. Kofi Amegah, and  Senior Lecturer in Environmental Epidemiology and Health at the Department of Biological, Environmental and Occupational Health of the University of Ghana, Dr Reginald Quansah. Present was the Coordinator of the Data Science Unit, Dr Josiah Wilson Tachie-Menson

Degree Type:
Master of PhilosophyDepartment of Health, Physical Education and Recreation
Programme Duration:
2 years (Standard Entry)
About Programme:

The Government of Ghana through it policies have upgraded Colleges of Education (COEs) into University Colleges and Polytechnics to Technical Universities. Nursing and Midwifery Training Colleges are in a similar upgrading process. This means that tutors and lecturers in these institutions who hold M.Ed./M.A. and other non-research Masters degrees would have to be upgraded to, at least, Master of Philosophy degrees, which are research based. In most instances, it is difficult for such teachers to leave the classroom to pursue regular university residential Masters programmes such as the MPhil. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the commencement of this Top-Up to MPhil programme on a sandwich/regular basis to enable these Lecturers and Tutors who, due to lack of study leave, are unable to pursue regular residential M.Phil programmes the opportunity to upgrade themselves. The upgradement from M.Ed./M.A. to M.Phil will give these Tutors and Lecturers the minimum requirement needed to continue their work in these institutions.

This programme will help achieve the inclusive and equitable quality education and promotion of lifelong learning opportunities the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Number 4 (Quality Education) hopes for. Therefore, for the nation to benefit fully from its educational aspirations and achieve the SDG 4, there is the need for skilled professionals with content and pedagogical knowledge to handle the students in these upgraded institutions.

With the upgrade of the COEs, Polytechnics and pending upgrading of Nursing and Midwifery Training Colleges to tertiary status, most of the Tutors and Lecturers are likely to be laid off. Since majority of these Tutors and Lecturers do not possess the minimum MPhil degree required to work as academic staff in these institutions. Hence, the Top-Up programme will enable the affected personnel with M.Ed./M.A. background in Health Education and closely related areas to upgrade themselves with the requisite knowledge and skills within a short time period.

Also, from the commencement of the M.A. sandwich programmes at the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) in 2008, over 500 students have passed out and most of these graduates are workers who cannot come to pursue their MPhil on regular basis, hence an avenue for them to Top-Up on the sandwich/regular basis to acquire their MPhil.

In line with the mission of the University of Cape Coast to provide quality education through the provision of comprehensive liberal and professional programmes, this top-up programme is designed to challenge learners to be creative, innovative and responsible citizens. Those who are capable of pursuing their PhD programmes would also take advantage to do so after this Top-Up MPhil sandwich/regular programme.

University of Ghana School of Public Health has similar programmes such as Master of Public Health (MPH) in Public Health. Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology School of Public Health also offers Master of Science (MSc) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Health Promotion and Education. However, all these programmes are administered on a regular residential basis. The MPhil Top-Up programme will allow students to pursue their MPhil on both sandwich and regular basis.

Target Groups

The programme targets the following groups of persons:

  1. School Health Education Programme (SHEP) coordinators at the Regional, Metropolitan, Municipal, District and Circuit education levels;
  2. Tutors in public and private Nursing and Midwifery Training Colleges and other Health Institutions of Higher learning;
  3. Other Personnel from the Ministry of Health and graduates with health related certificates;
  4. Environmental Health and Sanitation Officers/Workers at Regional, Metropolitan, Municipal and District levels;
  5. Teachers in public and private Basic, Senior High Schools, COEs, and Technical Universities;
  6. Personnel of NGOs in health related activities;
  7. Corporate and private fitness management personnel;
  8. Public and community health service providers;

Progression

After the Top-Up MPhil programme, a candidate may be allowed to upgrade to a Ph.D. programme if he/she obtains the following.

  1. CGPA of 3.5 in a course work.
  2. Not more than one grade C+.
  3. Score B+ or better MPhil Research Methods and Thesis.
  4. Take a course in Academic Writing and pass.
  5. Present a research proposal in an acceptable standard.
  6. Successfully defend a final research proposal before the Departmental Examination Board and pass with at least B+.

An 11-member committee has been inaugurated at a ceremony on campus to oversee the transition of the Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (IEPA) Committee as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation Category II Institute.

The inauguration of the committee was as a result of the upgrade of IEPA to UNESCO Category II Institute for the West Africa Sub-region in the areas of Educational Planning, Management and Leadership.

Members of the Committee

The committee will, therefore, liaise with the current Director of the Institute to manage the new Category II Centre before the appointment of a substantive Director-General.   The committee is chaired by Prof. John V. Mensah of the School for Development Studies. The members are the Dean of the School of Graduation Studies, Prof. Ernest L. Okorley; a representative of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Richie-Mike Wellington; Director of Research Innovation and Consultancy, Prof. Frederick Ato Armah; Dean of the Centre for International Education, Prof. Kwaku Boakye; Dean, Faculty of Educational Foundations, Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson.

The rest are Director of IEPA, Dr. (Bro) Michael Amakyi; Head of Legal Section, Mr. Solomon Faakye Esq; A representative of the National Council for Tertiary Education, Mrs. Sandra Amoah; Director of Human Resource, Rev. Isaac Baafi-Sarbeng and Assistant Registrar, IEPA, Mrs. Alberta Abena Konadu Owusu.

Terms of Reference

As part of the terms of reference, the committee is expected to prepare press releases for dissemination; finalise the constitutive documents such as Constitution/Statutes, Strategic plan, Action/implementation plan for 2020, Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UCC and IEPA. The Committee will also advertise key positions of the Category II Centre; constitute a search committee to identify appropriate candidates for management positions and submit recommendations to government for appointment.

In addition, the Committee will ensure that all stakeholders, and in particular UCC, are well informed of IEPA’s present status as well as facilitate the smooth transition of staff unto the Category II platform. The Committee shall engage the relevant stakeholders, including the media, on IEPA’s mission towards partnership and collaborative work and explore the possibility of securing an office space for the Institute at the Ministry of Education in Accra as well as put in place measures to ensure that the corporate image of IEPA is aligned with that of UNESCO.

Smooth Transition

Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, urged the committee to ensure a smooth transition from IEPA’s current state to the Category II status. “We are relying on the committee to navigate the IEPA through this process in order to finally reposition the Institute as a UNESCO Category II Centre,” he stressed.

Prof. Ampiah noted that with the Category II status, IEPA had a unique role to play in the West African Sub-Region in terms of Educational Leadership and Planning. “We need to work towards making IEPA get recognition by its functions both in Ghana and the West African Sub-Region,” Prof. Ampiah said.

The Vice-Chancellor commended the Government of Ghana and the Minister of Education especially Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh for the enormous support they have provided the University to realise this objective. “Government has really rallied behind us right from the onset” he noted.

Chairman's Remark

On behalf of members of the Committee, Prof. John Mensah thanked the Vice-Chancellor and Management of the University for the confidence reposed in them. He noted that they would ensure the terms of reference were implemented to the latter. “We will do everything within our capacity to meet all the requirements expected of IEPA as UNESCO Category II Institute,” he added.

It would be recalled that the General Conference of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), authorised the elevation of the Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (IEPA) to UNESCO Centre of Excellence Category II. The approval was granted by the UNESCO General Conference on Friday, 15th November 2019 as part of meetings for the 40th Session in Paris, France.
