Ghana Needs a Rigorous Air Monitoring Scheme

27 Jan, 2020 By louis Mensah

An expert in Air Quality Measurement, Dr. Charles Odame-Ankrah, has called for the implementation of a rigorous air monitoring scheme to ensure better health for people.

Speaking on the topic, “Air Quality and Health: Why we should worry”  at a joint public lecture organised under the auspices of the Department of Population and Health and the Faculty of Social Sciences, Dr. Odame-Ankrah noted that air pollution was one of the causes of death in the world.

Dr. Odame-Ankrah said Ghana was experiencing rapid urbanisation and industrialisation, and therefore, efforts must be made to enforce laws on air pollution to save lives and improve life expectancy in the country.

Effect of Air Pollution

Dr. Odame-Ankrah who is an alumnus of the University stated that more than seven million people died from exposure to air pollution according to a World Health Organisation (WHO) report in 2014. He added that most victims were from middle and low-income countries in the world. He further indicated that “These areas where air pollution is prevalent and exceed the WHO’s air quality guidelines are developing countries and accounts for more than 85% of the world’s population.

In the contexts of the Global Burden of Disease in 2013, he indicated that air pollution levels and attributable health impacts were quantified for 188 countries for the period 1990-2013. According to him, there were 2.9 million deaths in 2013 caused by outdoor fine particulate air pollution and an additional 215,000 deaths from exposure to ozone. “Indoor exposure to household air pollution from the use of solid fuels for cooking and heating was responsible for 2.9 million deaths in 2013,” he added.

Dr. Odame-Ankrah indicated that the total deaths recorded in 2013 as a result of air pollution was 5.5 million deaths in 2013 and was the fourth highest-ranking risk factor for death in the world. “Outdoor particulate air pollution specifically was the seventh leading risk factor for death globally, with cardiovascular disease (ischemic heart disease and stroke) accounting for the majority of these deaths,” he mentioned.
The Air Quality expert noted that some of the reported cases of death from air pollution were from lung cancer, chronic diseases, and respiratory infections. “Of these 2.9 million deaths, 64% were in Asia, especially China and India,” he stressed.

Creating Jobs from Air Quality Measurements

Despite these disturbing statistics, Dr. Odame-Ankrah noted that the University could create substantial jobs through Air Quality Measurements and also ensure good health for citizens. With partnership with Global Analyzer Systems Limited in Canada, Dr. Odame-Ankrah said he had developed equipment using cutting edge technology capable of photo-dissociating Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) to Nitric oxide (NO) using LEDS.

Dr. Odame-Ankrah said he was ready to collaborate with the University to introduce the invention to create jobs and also address health issues associated with air pollution. He expressed gratitude to the University for giving him the opportunity to become a prominent person.

Appreciation

Dr. Odame-Ankrah was presented a citation for his contributions to the University including teaching two courses at the Department of Environmental Science for free and also donating books valued at $60,000.

The lecture was chaired by the Director of Research, Innovation, and Consultancy, Prof. Frederick Ato-Armah. Present was the Provost, College of Humanities and Legal Studies, Prof. Eric F. Amuquandoh, Head, Department of Population and Health, Dr. David Doku, some lecturers and students from the University.

E-JUST Presents Scholarship Opportunities to UCC Students

27 Jan, 2020 By louis Mensah

A delegation from Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) has made a presentation to Management of the University on scholarship opportunities for African students.

The delegation led by Prof. Sameh Nada included Prof. Mona Gamal El-Din, Rava Tamek, Ms. Miyake Chicho and Ms. Midori Ozawa.

Purpose of Visit

The delegation briefed Management about the availability of scholarships at the Masters level in the Sciences that UCC students could apply and enrol on. The programmes for the scholarships are Electronics and Communications Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemical and Petrochemical Engineering, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Energy Resources Engineering, Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering and Material Science Engineering.

Others are Nanoscience, Energy Materials, Bio-Technology, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Heritage Science Programme and Conservation Science Track.

E-JUST is a research university with an ambition to cultivate an academic environment and become a benchmark in education for the Egyptian and African countries. It was first established as a bilateral agreement project between the Egyptian and Japanese governments in May 2009 and later in 2010  accepted its first batch of students.

Scholarship Package

According to Prof. El-Din, the scholarship covered tuition fees, accommodation, monthly stipend, medical and life insurance as well as flight ticket. She said the application period was from January 15-to February 15, 2020, and applicants would have to visit https://ejust.edu.eg/international-admission-general-admission/  to register.

Giving the background to E-JUST, Prof. El-Din explained that the institution was a research university that provided its students access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, as well as, the latest technologies. “Due to the resources and opportunities, E-JUST attracts distinguished faculty in its various fields, which gives students the opportunity to work side by side with high profile researchers on laboratory projects,” she noted.

Collaboration

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, commended E-JUST for its admission approach to get quality students. He said UCC would make the information available to students in the College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences and the College of Health and Allied Sciences to apply.
Prof. Ampiah noted that beyond the scholarship package, UCC would appreciate the collaboration between the two institutions to share best practices and resources together. “We need to look at our common interest and join forces to strengthen and make our institutions more visible” he noted. He urged E-JUST to consider including some programmes in the humanities for the scholarship package.

Prof. Ampiah said UCC would initiate steps to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with E-JUST to realise these objectives. He thanked the delegation for considering UCC students for the scholarship.

UCC Management Team

Present at the meeting were the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dora F. Edu-Buandoh, Registrar, Mr. John Kofi Nyan; Provost, College of Distance Education, Prof. Isaac K. A. Galyuon; Provost, College of Humanities and Legal Studies, Prof. Eric F. Amuquandoh; Provost, College of Health and Allied Sciences, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong; Provost, College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, Prof. Moses Jojo Eghan and Provost, College of Education Studies, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis.

Others were the Director of Academic Affairs, Mr. Jeff Onyame; Ag. Director of Public Affairs, Major Kofi Baah-Bentum(rtd) and Senior Assistant Registrar, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Georgina Asi Owusu.

Project Work

This is a faculty-wide course aimed at giving students their first experience in independent scholarly work. Students are guided to select a researchable problem, review literature on the problem, collect data, analyze them, and produce a report. This will make them self sufficient and independent in their quest to find knowledge and use the appropriate statistical methods and tools to report their findings.
