Registrar of Nursing and Midwifery Council Calls on Calls on Pro Vice-Chancellor

02 Apr, 2019 By louis Mensah

The Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (N&M), Ghana, Mr Felix Nyante, has led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dora Edu-Buandoh, as part of a working visit to the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

The delegation led by the Registrar, Nursing and Midwifery Council, was accompanied by the head of the Publications Unit, Mrs Mariam Bilson, Risk Management Officer-Cape Coast, Mrs Akosua Cyril.

Purpose of Visit

Explaining the purpose of the visit, the Dean, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Dr Dorcas Obiri-Yeboah said the team was in the University to discuss some issues concerning the School of Nursing and Midwifery with University management.  She indicated that as part of the visit, the team would have a training workshop with lecturers of the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

Admission Quota for Universities

On his part, Mr Nyante called on the University Management to make available a forecast of admission of students into the School of Nursing and Midwifery, to enable the Ministry of Health plan and budget for them before they graduate. He explained that the forecast would help the Ministry to fully implement the Quota System in the University to regulate the number of students in relation to the training equipment and the lecturers available to ensure the training of quality of nurses in the country. He further indicated that the enrolment plan would help address the issue of unemployment of nursing students after completion of their studies.

Unique Admission Requirements

The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dora F. Edu-Buandoh on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor thanked the team for the visit and was excited that the discussions would focus on issues that would improve the training of students. She explained that the general basic entry requirements for every Faculty/School and Department were unique from each other. She noted that the School would continue to adhere to the professional standards and regulation by the N&MC as far as admission and academic work were concerned.  She assured the delegation that the Quota System would be discussed at the management level for the necessary actions to be taken.

Present at the meeting were the Registrar, Mr John Kofi Nyan, the Director, Academics, Mr Jeff Teye Oyame and the Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences, Prof. Moses Jojo Eghan.

The delegation later held a workshop for faculty members of the School of Nursing and Midwifery to discuss issues affecting them as well as addressing their concerns.

Faculty of Social Sciences Organises Maiden Lecture Series

02 Apr, 2019 By louis Mensah

The Faculty of Social Sciences has organised its maiden edition of the Faculty’s Lecture Series on the theme “National Identification System and Ghana’s Development”.

Development Should Impact Society

The Executive Secretary, National Identification Authority (NIA), Prof. Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah, who delivered the lecture explained that Development was to impact society and enhance the wellbeing of people. “This is what the National Identification Authority seeks to achieve with the Ghana Card” he asserted.

National Identity Card

The Ghana Card is a national identity card that is issued by the Ghanaian authorities to Ghanaian citizens – both residents and non-residents, and legally and permanently resident foreign nationals. It is proof of identity, citizenship and residence of the holder and aims at making identification system easier and convenient; it includes cards like the National Health Insurance, Driver’s license and Passport.

Features of the NIA Card

Prof. Attafuah said the features of the card were amazing and could be used for all transactions where identification was required such as pension, National Health Insurance, Social Security, Bank Account, registration of Land, registration of SIM Cards, Insurance Policies. According to the NIA boss, the card also had security features for the visually impaired, a magnetic field to allow for communication and dual interface.

Prof. Attafuah said the exercise was a serious business that cost a lot of money, but it was being issued to Ghanaians for free. He added that the cost of replacement was GH ¢25.00 and each card was valid for a period of 10 years.  He explained that the features of the card were different from any other that was in use elsewhere, indicating “It is only Estonia that has similar features as that of Ghana.”

Data Protection is Assured

The NIA boss said data protection was one of their concerns but added that they were training their personnel both home and abroad to address them. He said the entire project would cost GH ¢12 billion and would be funded through a Private-Public Partnership arrangement.

Prof. Attafuah advised students not to pay any fee to NIA personnel when the registration process begins in Cape Coast. He also cautioned them on the issue of double registration.

Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences Honours Dr. Francis Kojovi Morny

02 Apr, 2019 By louis Mensah

The Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences has honoured the memory of Dr Francis Kojovi Morny with a lecture.

Dr Morny was the main brain behind the set-up of the Department of Optometry in the University of Cape Coast to offer the Doctor of Optometry program and was also a senior lecturer in the department. He also served as a lecturer in KNUST when the program began.

Train More Optometrist

Speaking on the topic “A future of blindness, where is the light.”  Prof.  Olalekan Alabi Oduntan of the University of Madonna, Nigerian, called for the training of more Optometrists in Ghana and other African countries to manage the high numbers of eye defects that lead to blindness. He said many people lose their sights as a result of the lack of experts to diagnose and manage the challenge in the early stages. He said the situation had led to many job losses and other uncomfortable situations for many individuals and families.

Cases of Eye Defects on the Increase

Prof. Oduntan indicated that the increasing cases of eye defects could have been corrected if more optometrists were trained to bring relief to such people. He said the number of Optometrists in Ghana was lower than the current number of eye care practioners to handle the numerous eye cases associated. He, therefore, called on the government to ensure that many people were trained as optometrists to save the situation. “We need to train more eye care professionals, ophthalmologists, ophthalmic nurses and many optometrists. Many eye defect cases have become irreversible due to the absence or an inadequate number of these professionals,” he noted. He cautioned that many people risk going blind if more optometrists were not trained to salvage the situation.

Promote Optometry in UCC

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, assured that he would do his best to ensure the development of Optometry in the University. He eulogised the late Dr Francis Kojovi Morny for leading the campaign to develop optometry in the University.
