UCC Students Win Grants from YES-Ghana

26 Apr, 2019 By louis Mensah

Youth Empowerment Synergy (YES-Ghana) has awarded grants to some students of the University at an innovation fair on campus.

In all, the students who are in groups of five were awarded a total grant of GH ¢ 100, 000 to implement social change and social justice interventions either on campus or surrounding communities of the University. Each group would be presented with funds ranging from GH ¢14, 000 to GH ¢20, 000 to undertake on projects to address the challenges they have identified in these communities.

Youth Leadership for Social Change

Speaking at the programme, the Project Manager of YES Ghana, Mr. Eric Saforo, said the innovation was part of the Youth Leadership for Social Change Project being implemented by YES-Ghana in collaboration with the University of Cape Coast (UCC), University for Development Studies (UDS) and University of Energy and Natural Resources with funding from the Ford Foundation. He noted that students, who were now fellows of YES-Ghana, had received rigorous training in leadership for social change through the Youth Academy for Social Change.  “They have continuously received professional mentoring from selected faculty members and industry players and the next stage is for them to practically demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have acquired” he explained.

According to Mr. Sarforo, “The practical application of the skills, knowledge, and understanding gained through the Youth Academy for Social Change is essential in ensuring that the fellows learn to generalize and apply what they have learned in other situations”. He noted that through the process, the youth leaders would become more involved in their communities, and provide real services to the identified communities.

Criteria for Selection of Universities

Explaining the criteria for the selection of the universities, Mr. Saforo said YES-Ghana chose the three institutions because of the poverty levels prevalent in the regions where the universities were located. He indicated that the fellows had proposed innovative solutions to address some of the problems in the identified communities. “A proposal assessment committee comprising faculty members and experienced development workers have facilitated the process in which groups of participants selected priorities and designed projects” he noted.

Mr. Saforo explained that the fellows would receive the necessary technical support to lead the implementation of their group projects, including managing their activities, leveraging stakeholder involvement, networking opportunities, continuous learning, and support with financial and reporting among others.

Presentation by Groups

Each of the five groups that benefited from the grant made a presentation on their projects with comments from a panel made up of lecturers from UCC. Their projects focused on tackling sanitation at Amamoma community; tackling teenage pregnancy at Kwaprow; making life comfortable for disabled students at UCC and tackling poor academic performance of pupils at Kwaprow.

24 Apr, 2019 By louis Mensah

A delegation from The Gambia, has visited the University to interact with the faculty of the Department of Peace Studies of the School for Development Studies.

The delegation led by the Director-General of Strategic Policy and Delivery Department, at the office of the President of Gambia, Mr. Alhagie Nyangado, was received by the Dean of the School for Development Studies, Dr. E. Y. Tenkorang, and the Head of  Department of Peace Studies (DPS), Dr. Patrick Osei-Kufuor, at the School’s Conference Room.

The interaction was under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership of the United Nations (UN), West African Network for Peace Building (WANEP)-Gambia and the Government of Gambia.

Fact Finding Tour

The leader of the delegation, Mr. Nyangado said members of the delegation were on a fact finding tour to acquaint themselves with Ghana’s Peace Architecture; and how it has been implemented to help maintain peace in the country. According to him, the Gambia was in the process of modeling her Peace Architecture after experiencing a 22year autocratic rule which left the country in tatters. “We therefore needed a good model to start with and since Ghana Peace Architecture is the best in the sub-region, we saw it fit to visit and see it at work,” he noted. The visit to the DPS, UCC was part of a visit to Ghana’s National Peace Council (NPC).

Sharing Experiences of Ghana’s Peace Council

Sharing his experiences, a former Director of the Institute for Development Studies (now SDS) and former Provost of the College of Humanities and Legal Studies, Professor S. B. Kendie, said the role of the NPC in maintaining peace in Ghana, Kenya and elsewhere cannot be understated.

On his part, the Dean of SDS, Mr. Tenkorgan who is a member of the Central Region Peace Council enumerated some successes chalked in the Region in curbing and managing the spots of violence that threaten the peace in the region. He also shed light on some challenges confronting the NPC and the Central Region Peace Council. He urged the delegation to take cues from the setbacks and make the Gambian NPC a better one.

The group left UCC with the promise to make The Gambia NPC a model on the continent worthy of emulation by others. They assured the gathering that the NPC of The Gambia will be at the forefront of conflict resolution, peacemaking and peace building in the West African nation.

Members Present at the Meeting

Other members of the delegation were Mr. Manding Saidylchan, Principal Assistant Secretary-Ministry of Interior, Mr. Lamin Banda, Staff officer-Ministry of Interior, Ms. Salama Njie, National Coordinator-WANEP-The Gambia, Mr. Mamodou Bah, Programme Officer, Early Warning-WANEP, The Gambia, Ms. Isatou Cham, Programme Officer, Peace and Security, ECOWAS Permanent Mission, The Gambia; Ms. Rebecca Adda-Dontoh, Peace and Development Advisor, UN The Gambia and Mrs. Melody Azinim, Peace and Governance Analyst of the UNDP.

Management will Collaborate with Students’ Leadership

Speaking at the function, the Provost of the College of Education Studies, Prof. Eric Magnus Wilmot, who chaired the function assured that Management would collaborate with the students’ leadership in managing the University. He called on them to always engage the University Management with dialogue in resolving issues, adding that “Let’s come into consensus with the sole aim of creating a conducive academic environment for all members of the University Community, especially for you the students”.

Creation of Research Commons

Prof. Wilmot said the University Management had approved funds for the creation of Research Commons at the Sam Jonah Library to improve postgraduate students’ research work. He informed the students that a number of projects including the state-of-the-art lecture theatres were under construction and would soon be completed to ease the congestion in the existing lecture halls. “The era where some postgraduate students met in their lecturers’ offices for lectures will be no more because some of the lecture theatres will solely be devoted to postgraduate students,” he announced.

Prof. Wilmot represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah at the function.

Work as A Team

The Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, Prof. Ernest Laryea Okorley, advised the student leaders to work as a team to unite the entire students’ body of the University. “If the SRC and GRASAG executives do not hold the students front together we won’t have peace and progress for our University,” he admonished.

Listen to Concerns of Students

Prof. Okorley urged the student leaders to listen to the concerns of their followers and make efforts to address them adding that “A leader who does not listen to his followers is like a car on top speed without a break”. However, he cautioned the leaders not to be a mouthpiece for students on any issue without processing the information they receive from them. “A leader who follows the people is like a car that is broken down, it can never move” he told them.

GRASAG Leadership Needs the Support and Cooperation of Postgraduate Students

In his inaugural speech, the President of GRASAG, Mr. Albert Awortwe Sagoe called for the support and cooperation of students to effectively carry out the responsibilities entrusted to executives. “Our administration will be member centered where as much as possible we will assimilate the views and ideas of all to push the association to the next level” he assured.

Mr. Sagoe said his team would collaborate with the School of Graduate Studies and University Management to help promote a congenial atmosphere for postgraduate studies to thrive in the University. “In our current dispensation, students and management must be seen as partners in development not adversarial parties with conflicting interest. This can only be done when both parties respect the views and contributions each other in solving the myriad of problems bedeviling us,” he noted.

We will Place Students Interest Above Anything

On his part, the SRC President, Mr. Zaki Abdul-Hamid commended the efforts of the previous executives and indicated that their efforts would not be in vain. “My team will also place students’ interest above anything,” he stressed. He said his administration would continue to deepen the collaboration by opening all channels of communications. He appealed to students to take keen interests in SRC activities in order to build a formidable students body.

Present at the function were the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Eugene K. M. Darteh and the Director of Academic Affairs, Mr. Jeff T. Onyame.
